Hi-Tech Silicone Rubber Mfy Ltd's tool room is its "secret weapon" in creating an array of useful keypads, mainly for European markets.

MORE often than not, keypads are regarded merely as a means to operate computers, television remote controls, mobile phones and other devices. Yet they are transforming. No longer are keypads simply accessories. Modern manufacturers based in Hong Kong strive to create new keypads that are quality products in their own right.

At a 200-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland, Yan Chuen Co Ltd uses a series of measuring instruments imported from Japan and Taiwan in striving for the highest possible quality in its keypads, zebra connectors and rubber gaskets.

Model YC-1638 for use in DVD or TV remote controls is unit priced at US$0.12 FOB Hong Kong. A keypad for construction-site instruments, model YC-1873, costs US$0.39, while model YC-1600, a DVD or TV remote-control keypad intended for the Japanese market, is US$0.14.

These products have all the basic features. Along with quality, the 10-year-old manufacturer focuses on superior customer service and a rapid delivery time range of 7-14 days.

"From receiving an order until finishing it, we report to clients 2-3 times a week," says sales executive Kenneth Leung.

This ISO 9001-certified enterprise produces three million mid-to-high-end items per month. There is no minimum order for customers in major markets like Europe, the US and Hong Kong.

Hi-Tech Silicone Rubber Mfy Ltd's pride and joy, and its edge in the quest for superior quality, is the company's tool room. "Many companies have their own research and development, quality control and manufacturing facilities, but few have their own tool rooms," says marketing director Raymond Wong.

This 18-year-old manufacturer's product range includes rubber keypads for PDAs, mobile phones and remote controls. Hi-Tech offers laser-etching with its mobile phone keypads, unit priced at US$0.40-1.80 FOB Hong Kong. PDA-related items, costing US$0.50-1.20, feature a protective coating to prevent the letters from wearing off. Remote-control keypads cost US$0.10-1.60. Minimum order is 1,000 units for shipment within 14 days.

Raw materials come from Japan and, to a lesser extent, the Chinese mainland. The keypads are destined for markets in Europe and Asia.

Hi-Tech Silicone's 1,200-worker factory produces seven million pieces monthly. By August, that figure will rise 10-20%, Wong says.

The high quality offered by 23-year-old Hoi Wah Industrial Co Ltd revolves around a protective coating on its conductive silicone rubber keypads. "The printing is clear. You can rub it, but it will not wear off, even over time," says merchandiser Cally Yip.

Calculator pads, unit priced at US$0.06 FOB Hong Kong, have Euro-conversion, plus the standard add, subtract, multiply and divide functions. The main material is silicone from suppliers in Japan and Taiwan.

A three-member design team plays a key role at Hoi Wah's 150-worker facatory in Huizhou on the Chinese mainland. The company's own designs account for 75% of production.

Upcoming designs "add more colour" to create "funny and playful" items popular in the toy industry. Hoi Wah also aims to increase its OEM work.

The minimum order is 10,000 pieces for shipment within 7-10 days, usually to the main markets of South Korea and Hong Kong.

You Eal (HK) Ltd claims to have "the smallest gap in the world (0.15_0.05mm) between keys" on its Special Assembly "SA" type mobile-phone keypads, according to sales manager Samuel Cheung. Hence, the company's keypads suit even the smallest phones. You Eal keypads won the HKEIA Award for Outstanding Innovation and Technology Products, in 1999, 2000 and 2001.

Manufacturing in South Korea since 1978 and in Hong Kong since 1986, You Eal also produces conductive silicone inter-connectors (zebra connectors), silicone rubber keypads and rubber parts. The monthly output of more than 40 million pieces goes mainly to the US, Europe, South Korea, the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong.

You Eal has two factories in Shenzhen and six in South Korea, employing a total of 1,500 workers. For raw materials, You Eal turns overseas, including to Japan and the US for high quality silicone rubber.
