The Finishing Touch
Jing Mei Industrial Co Ltd
|Jing Mei Industrial Co Ltd specialises in decorative and functional electroplating for a wide and ever-increasing range of electronic components and products|
Jing Mei Industrial Co Ltd, a vertically integrated surface-finishing manufacturer and OEM/ODM products manufacturer, began in 1968 in Hong Kong. In the 1980s, the company started to invest in state-of-the-art equipment and hi-tech plastic plating and moulding. It was a move that enabled the company to fully control the quality of its electroplated products, thus boosting business.
Today, the firm offers one-stop surface finishing services comprising product design and development, mould design and fabrication, plastic injection moulding and surface finishing to final product assembly.
It has developed an expertise in decorative and functional plating for plastic components and products using electroplating and other surface finishing processes, says assistant director of sales and marketing William Chung. These include electroless plating, electrophoretic deposition (ED) coatings, physical vapour deposition (PVD) coatings and spray-painting.
"Our range of surface-finishing techniques is attributable to our technical knowledge and application experience, which enables us to differentiate ourselves from our competitors," Chung says.
The firm keeps abreast of emerging trends by leveraging on its strong R&D capabilities. Sales and marketing staff work closely with customers and engineering teams in the development of new ODM finished products. For example, one successful design - massaging showerheads - generated five million units of sales for Jing Mei.
The company also provides project management to customers in Europe and Asia, as well as warehousing and logistics management to customers in North America.
Chung adds that Jing Mei's sharp business acumen has helped the company to gain a niche in the rapidly growing telecommunications industry since the early 1990s.
"Apart from doing surface finishing for mobile phone cases, our electroless plating, which is more a functional than a decorative service, has been widely adopted by telecommunications and electronics manufacturers," Chung says.
"It provides protection to electronic transmissions or reception circuitry, preventing telecommunications and electronic products from electromagnetic waves."
In 1997, Jing Mei made inroads into the automotive market by providing surface-finishing services for electroplated plastic parts for multinational automobile manufacturers.
With growing demand from customers in North America, the company established a customer service and distribution centre in Chicago in 1998.
Recognising the importance of the Chinese mainland market, Jing Mei has also set up offices in Beijing and Tianjin to better facilitate its mainland business.
"Our automotive unit, which is driving towards the QS 9000 standard, is well positioned to benefit from the Chinese mainland's accession into the World Trade Organization," says Chung.
"To tap into the domestic automotive market, we also offer sales and after-sales services to our overseas clients who have made a presence on the mainland," he adds.
Jing Mei has a complete quality assurance and control system, while its three manufacturing plants in Shenzhen and Panyu on the mainland have ISO 9000 certification.
