|Merchant Corp Ltd's rocker, rotary, slide, micro and push switches are exported to the US, Europe and Asia|
Take eight-year-old D & S Mfg Ltd, which produces TUV-certified slide and rocker switches for use with home appliances such has heaters and hairdryers.
"We are stepping up production to meet demand for high power switches made from a combination of metal, PC, PBT and nylon sourced from the US, Taiwan and the Chinese mainland," says general manager Handy Hui.
"We can tailor-make high power, high temperature and low profile switches to match clients' requirements from our own Denco brand range, and customers can choose between a variety of fittings."
The ISO 9001-certified company produces about 800,000 switches per month at a 6,000-square-metre factory in Guangdong Province on the mainland.
"In on our experience, clients are looking for good quality, small, high-power and low-cost switches," says Hui, adding that D & S Mfg requires no minimum order and delivers within 1-4 weeks of order confirmation.
Five-year-old, ISO 9001-certified Hong Kong Kechenda Electronic Co Ltd also understands the necessity for quality goods and competitive pricing. "We focus on high-end R&D and testing to guarantee reliable and durable products at affordable prices," claims sales officer Ronnie Hung.
The company's switches and jacks are designed for use with digital cameras, MP3 players, computers and cordless telephones. "Our main markets are the mainland, Korea, Japan and the US," notes Hung.
He says that Hong Kong Kechenda operates a complete production system from tooling design and product manufacturing to assembly in order to ensure it is a cost-effective and time-efficient supplier.
Production takes place at a 5,000-square-metre mainland factory in Dongguan staffed by 450 workers, who produce an average of one million switches and jacks a month for sale in 2,000-piece minimum orders delivered 10-20 days after confirmation.
The US and Asia, together with Europe, are equally important markets for 10-year-old, ISO 9001-certified Merchant Corp Ltd. "Most of our products are used in small electrical appliances and office machines," observes sales and marketing director Kenneth Tse.
"Our main products include rocker, rotary, slide, micro and push switches, AC socket and receptacles, AC travel adaptors and indicator lamps."
Tse says new products developed in-house by Merchant's R&D staff in Hong Kong and on the mainland bear the CMm brand. "We also accept OEM contracts," he adds.
Product development, assembly, testing and quality assurance are all carried out under one roof. "Full control allows us to develop new products more cost-effectively," Tse contends.
The firm's wholly-owned 118,000-square-foot factory located in Dongguan on the southern mainland is also equipped with UL-approved testing facilities to maintain product quality.
FOB prices are available on request for minimum orders of 5,000-10,000 pieces, depending on stock availability, delivered 4-6 weeks after order confirmation.
Another company that invests heavily in R&D is 23-year-old Tatt Shing Metal Work Mfy, which produces membrane switches for the global market.
According to Tatt Shing sales manager Chris Wong, sales are divided into three key areas: high volume (white goods, educational tools and electronic toys), mid volume (office equipment such as faxes and photocopiers) and low volume (medical and industrial computers).
"Switches can be custom-designed to fit a wide variety of applications wherever low current momentary switches are required," he explains. "We have sales offices in Europe and the US to liaise with local clients and assist with their requirements."
Wong says the product trend is moving towards high-end materials with an emphasis on environmental protection and compliance issues. "The materials we use such as polycarbonate and polyester are ROHS or EN71 compliant," he claims, adding that Tatt Shing is ISO 9000- and ISO 14000-certified.
Production is carried out by more than 700 employees in an 18,000-square-metre, purpose-built mainland plant in Shenzhen that is equipped with hi-tech testing equipment as well as a modular Class 100K clean room facility where switches are assembled in a sterile environment.
Minimum orders depend on the value of the product. "For example, we supply as few as 50 membrane switches for our industrial computer customers," says Wong, noting that delivery takes place 2-4 weeks following order confirmation.
Demonstrating yet again that Hong Kong switch manufacturers always have an eye on the technological future and are switched on to the needs of their clients.
