Sound And Vision(HKTDC Electronics, Vol 02,2005)
Where would you expect to find the young, ambitious and highly talented managing director of a company with a portfolio of about 80 hi-tech audio and video products?
If it's Leung Chi Ming, managing director of Yuen Fook Industrial Co Ltd, it's definitely not behind a polished desk, dictating letters and making high-powered phone calls.
Very much a hands-on perfectionist, Leung is more likely to be found in the workshop adjoining his office. After getting through his administrative workload he likes nothing better than to change into jeans and shirtsleeves, take up his tools and tinker away at perfecting his next generation of new AV products.
A talented electrical engineer, Leung has been fascinated since boyhood with all aspects of AV products and still spends many of his waking hours devising ways of upgrading them.
His brother Leung Chi Man also fills a key role by managing Yuen Fook's factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland, which is currently being expanded to about 5,000 square metres.
Among the most popular items produced by the 150-strong workforce are sophisticated karaoke players/systems with accompanying microphones and amplifiers.
Other lines include multimedia speakers, surround sound speakers, and home theatre systems, speaker stands, microphones and headsets, public address systems, AV selectors and splitters that enable the TV signal being received by a master TV set to be "split" among up to eight "drone" screens.
Yuen Fook also produces portable PA systems that can be carried on the shoulder or placed on a solid surface, making them ideal for sales personnel, public speakers and educators.
"We offer competitive prices and quality backed by AQL 2.54 standards and CE and LVD certification," explains sales and marketing executive Tam Ho Fan. "We have more than 14 years in the business and our experienced R&D staff produces a wide range of products on an OEM or ODM basis."
The company's products, which are usually available in traditional silver or black but also include small ivory-coloured plastic speakers, can be found all over Europe.
They are particularly popular in France and Spain, where approximately 70% of Yuen Fook's European exports are sold under OEM terms.
"It's what the customer wants and it also applies across the board to our sales in the US, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and other parts of Asia," says Tam. "It's the same situation faced by many other Hong Kong-based firms - the buyers demand top quality, lowest prices and their own brands."
Yuen Fook's ability to meet such demanding criteria has seen the company flourish since it began operations in 1990 in a factory building in Fotan, where it still has its headquarters.
"We welcome buyers inspecting our procedures," adds Tam, claiming that "without exception" clients are impressed with Yuen Fook's stringent quality control measures. "In addition, each of our newest products goes through a gruelling process of tests and more tests before it goes on the market."
She says Yuen Fook regards its products as foolproof. "I've been with the company for several years and we've never had a buyer complaint in all that time - though of course after-sales service is there if required."
But Yuen Fook faces one problem that never goes away - to keep ahead of its competition by introducing new ideas or upgrading present-day innovations to satisfy the demands of today's music lovers.
Which is why Leung Chi Ming is continually tinkering away at yet another bright idea that will hopefully enhance the quality of sound and vision for music and movie mavens worldwide.
