Communication Devices

With the expertise of a 27-year business history, Prod-Art Co Ltd facilitates discussions at a distance using these FRS two-way radios.

NO matter whether the arena of work is a construction site, baby nursery or security booth, reliability and confidence are paramount for success. Makers of two-way communication devices answer the call from customers by supplying high-quality products capable of strong performance.

"Quality electronic components make our products superior," says Prod-Art Co Ltd marketing executive Lydia Wu.

Prod-Art, a 27-year-old manufacturer of two-way radios, pagers, calculators, clocks and electronic toys, is ISO 9002-certified.

"During and after production, we use strict quality controls to ensure high quality," Wu says. She attributes much of the company's success to superior engineering. Designs are created in-house or to custom specifications.

About 15% of Prod-Art's business is OEM work, mainly for the US and Europe. The company aims to expand into Latin America and Africa.

Each month 20,000-30,000 items emerge from its 1,500-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. Raw materials come from the mainland and Taiwan. Minimum order is 1,000 pieces for shipment within 30-45 days. Unit prices are US$10-18 FOB Hong Kong.

Quality is paramount at Tsuen Shing Enterprises Ltd. "Our target customers are reputable importers in Europe and the US," says senior marketing executive Evon Chow.

Tsuen Shing makes private mobile radios (PMR), family radio services (FRS) items, wireless intercoms and walkie-talkies. "We offer stringent quality control and high value," Chow says. She anticipates a trend towards designs that use metallic colours and ergonomic shapes.

Tsuen Shing promotes quality through continual staff training and frequent visits to overseas exhibitions. Its business is 70% OEM and ODM work, with its own-brand products accounting for 30%.

"We are proud of our trustworthiness and quality. Our niche is generating ideas and creating customers' products from the conceptual stage through to mass production in a cost-effective way," says Chow.

Overall monthly production at Tsuen Shing's factories in Zengcheng and Ningbo on the Chinese mainland reaches 300,000 pieces. Shipments depart 6-8 weeks after order confirmation. The unit prices are US$2-30 FOB Hong Kong.

At Golden Source Electronics Ltd, the motto is "do it right the first time", says marketing manager Angelina Leung.

Established in 1978, Golden Source produces two-way communicators, caller-ID phones, answering machines and stand-alone phones for small offices, home offices and mass markets.

"Our products are trouble-free, user-friendly and tailor-made. They are superior due to good designs, high quality and competitive prices," Leung says.

Golden Source's 3,000-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland produces 400,000-500,000 pieces monthly for sale in North America, Europe and Australia. Minimum order is 3,000 pieces with shipment 30-45 days after order confirmation and receipt of a letter of credit. The unit prices are US$4-18 FOB Hong Kong.

Most of the business is OEM. Raw materials come from the US, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan. The company has ISO 9002 accreditation.

Techwall Electronics Co Ltd director S.M. Wong vows to create the best-possible transceivers, baby monitors and walkie-talkies at the most reasonable prices.

"Our ideal users are professionals in security or at construction sites. We are highly focused on making reliable telecommunications devices that meet component standards in destination countries," Wong says.

Techwall offers new features like trendy colours, while stressing overall quality. "Our buyers for hand-held transceivers are very conventional. For them, simplicity of use and reliability are most important, especially in emergencies," says Wong.

Monthly production is 10,000 sets at Techwall's factory in Panyu on the Chinese mainland. Body materials and interior components are sourced on the mainland and from Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.

Major markets include Europe, Russia, the Ukraine and South America. "We worked hard for the experience necessary to meet customers' needs," says Wong.

At RF Electronics Products Mfy Ltd, marketing director Ellis Leung highlights reliable performance and high quality of the company's baby monitors, 433MHz wireless doorbells and walkie-talkies, all manufactured at a 300-employee mainland factory in Huizhou.

"Our policy is 'good quality, good performance and better service'," Leung says.

The easy-to-use products have excellent sound quality. "We provide technology for communication at distances up to 3km," says Leung.

A two-channel feature allows users to change frequencies while another function reduces power to preserve battery life. Monthly production is 20,000 pieces per model.

Shipment for a 1,000-piece minimum order is 40 days after order confirmation. The FOB Hong Kong unit prices are US$13-25.

Raw materials come from Hong Kong, Japan and the Chinese mainland. Most of the sales are to Europe, although RF Electronics does have plans for North America. About 40% of its business is OEM.

Siren Sounds

Safety & Security Products

Travellers appreciate Wellmike Industries (HK) Ltd's Mini e-Alert alarm for its protection of personal belongings using a simple remote operation.

TUGGING a pin to release an alarming high-decibel siren can make all the difference in personal security. Although devices to perform such a function are nothing new, Hong Kong manufacturers are proving market-savvy by pushing the bounds of innovation in function and design.

Wellmike Industries (HK) Ltd is a 16-year-old firm offering 180 varieties of alarms and personal security products. Supported by an office in Hong Kong, its ISO 9000-certified factory employs 250 workers in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. Raw materials come from the Chinese mainland and Japan.

Model DX-143, the Mini e-Alert, features a simple remote operation. "Lock the device on the handle of your briefcase, luggage or any personal item you don't want touched," says company representative Hilda Lo. Unwanted handling activates the alarm, and you "follow the sound".

The unit price is US$10 FOB Hong Kong, based on a minimum order of 1,200 sets. The price includes an attachable alarm and remote-control key-chain. Shipment is 30 days after order confirmation.

Sonca Products Ltd has a 48-year history supplying battery-operated flashlights, lanterns, personal alarms and mini-fans to the US, Europe and Japan. It has an operations office in Hong Kong and a 55,000-square-metre, ISO 9002-certified factory employing 2,500 workers on the Chinese mainland. Raw materials come from the mainland, Taiwan and Japan.

"For nearly 50 years, we have promoted our own brands with distribution in Europe and pan-America. Now we are the world's single largest flashlight maker. We continue developing more handy products to meet growing market demands and changing trends," says sales manager Jimmy Law.

Among the products are models 185SP (a heart-shaped personal alarm) and 171SP (an alarm torch). Each has a searing, high-pitched siren of 140 decibels activated by pulling a pin. The unusually loud noise "gives consumers better service than the 90-110 decibel alarms usual in today's market", says Law.

With model 185SP measuring a discreet 48x48x11mm, even Hong Kong's police find variations of the product useful in crime-prevention programs. It costs US$1.85-1.90 FOB Hong Kong, depending on packaging. Minimum order is 5,000 pieces.

Model 171SP is a dual-function flashlight/alarm. The size of a business-card holder, this unassuming device startles attackers using Sonca's trademark 140-decibel siren. The unit price is US$2.80 FOB Hong Kong based on a minimum order of 3,000 items. For both models, shipments depart 45 days after order confirmation.

Power View Industrial Ltd is a nine-year-old OEM/ODM enterprise with its main office in Hong Kong and a 200-worker factory in nearby Shenzhen. Using raw materials from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan, the company specializes in PIR sensor lights, shock and magnetic sensor alarms, visitor chimes and personal alarms.

Marketing manager M.K. Chan stresses the importance of customized responses to individual markets. "We develop new ideas and styles for different markets," he says.

The company offers variations of a whimsical personal-security device, such as models SH999 (the Mouse-Guard alarm), SH868 (the Safe-Heart alarm) and SH768 (the Power Guard alarm).

Measuring 87x60x20mm, the Mouse-Guard is a two-in-one alarm/spotlight encased in bright plastic. "You can pocket or hand-carry it and press the panic button if in danger," says Chan.

The Mouse-Guard costs US$1.70 FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order is 2,000 pieces with shipment 30 days after order confirmation.

The Safe-Heart and Power Guard models are heart-shaped and rectangular variations. They come in different colours and measure about 62x42x24mm. The unit cost is US$1.40-1.50 FOB Hong Kong based on a 2,000-piece minimum order. Shipment is 30-35 days after order confirmation.

Uni-Lockey Mfg Co Ltd is a 22-year-old Hong Kong-based manufacturer creating an array of key-chains. One million pieces per month bound for major markets in the US and Europe emerge from its 700-worker factory in Shenzhen.

Models UK-2600 and UK-2100 are personal-alarm key-chains in translucent and metallic colours. The former emits 120 decibels while the latter is 110 decibels. Both feature cheerfully coloured plastic and ergonomic shapes 6-7cm long.

"The alarm is triggered by pulling the key-ring for a very loud high-low, high-low noise," says marketing executive George Chan.

Unit price is US$1.10 FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order is 3,000 pieces for shipment after 30 days.

On The Spot For Sports

Sporting Electronics

Favour Light Enterprises Ltd delights night athletes with a double-tube rubber lantern (centre), an aluminium torch (left) and even a headlight.

WITH health and fitness ranking high among popular lifestyle priorities, Hong Kong-based suppliers offer a complete range of sports timers and accessories for everyone from professional athletes to evening joggers.

Hedworth Ltd marketing manager Stephen Shum says this market segment is definitely healthy. "We always benefit from major sports events like the World Cup or Olympic Games," he enthuses.

Fifteen-year-old Hedworth provides a complete range of timekeeping options, including two new models: the HK-618 Jumbo stopwatch and the HK-618M multifunction stopwatch. Both are in sturdy ABS and silicon rubber.

Aptly named, the Jumbo has an oversized LCD display and a chrono-stopwatch, along with normal hours/minutes/seconds timekeeping, a calendar and alarm functions.

The HK-618M is a sister model with the same features (but a regular LCD display) plus dual time zones, a four-lap memory and recall feature and a countdown timer.

Both models are hand-held and have neck cords. "We are happy to quote competitive prices based on minimum quantities of 1,000 per item," Shum says. Shipments depart 30-45 days after order confirmation.

Hong Kong Everlite Co Ltd has 25 years' experience and offers numerous stopwatches and other sporting devices that currently sell well.

"We always look for a competitive edge through innovation and design. Our latest stopwatches, the W23-0248 series, feature 10-, 30- or 60-lap memory functions as well as segmented, total, and continuous time from nine hours, 59 minutes, 59.9 seconds. They can also record and display the fastest, slowest and average lap times," says assistant sales manager Clara Ho.

These time wizards can show frequency, times and working times simultaneously. The regular clock mode has hour, minutes, seconds, year, month, day, week and alarm settings. The large LCD displays occupy sturdy ABS cases shaped for easy grip and with convenient neck cords.

Unit prices begin at US$5.50 FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order is 1,000 items for shipment after 45 days.

Everlite also offers a more basic range of stopwatches - the W23-0251 series, which has a generous LCD display and split/reset-alarm and start/stop-date buttons. Although shaped for easy handling, there is also a neck cord. Prices start at US$1.60 FOB Hong Kong per unit. Minimum order is 1,000 units.

Rivalling the importance of timekeepers are accessories for training at night. "We offer a complete range of battery-operated lanterns and lights so people can train in the dark or after work," says Favour Light Enterprises Ltd manager Stephanie Shiu.

Model 326 features a strap to secure a powerful lamp to an athlete's head. This design attracts considerable attention.

An innovative lantern (model DT-988IP) with an infra-red remote-control unit facilitates on-the-spot training. "It uses two powerful tubes to provide light. Users switch them up and down or on and off as needed," says Shiu.

Favour Light also offers spotlights and aluminium torches. Prices depend on models and quantities. Minimum order is 3,000 units for shipment within 45 days.

Also enhancing athletic occasions is Fee Tat Holdings (HK) Ltd, an ISO 9001-certified manufacturer with more than 30 years' experience. "We have a nice range of multifunction lights that add something extra to training sessions or sporting events," says export manager Peter Ho.

Lantern model 2255RDF features a built-in AM-FM radio while model 2303 is a lantern/cassette player combo. "These offer added value and are very popular with male and female athletes the world over," says Ho.

Model 2268, a rechargeable lantern with a built-in fan, is suitable for cooling off after training. "Rechargeable batteries are a convenient option for frequent users. The fan unit creates a powerful breeze while the lantern gives illumination," Ho says.

Fee Tat uses bright colour combinations and ABS cabinets. "Our Fee Tat label is applied to all products unless negotiated otherwise," Ho says.

Shipment is after 35 days. Minimum order is 500 items per model.

Hong Kong companies also supply thermo-electric coolers and warmers, pedometers and a host of analogue, digital, hybrid and sensor stopwatches, including some suitable for water sports.
