Digital Assistants/Data Banks

OneWorld Enterprises Ltd offers PDAs in gray or purple, featuring phone books, appointment schedules, calendars and calculators.

TRUSTY Filofax-style personal organisers have surrendered substantial turf to their electronic counterparts - personal digital assistants (PDAs) and data banks - as essential tools for today's busy executives.

Hong Kong-based companies, such as OneWorld Enterprises Ltd, have found ready global markets for their electronic organisers. A manufacturer of radios, LCD clocks and calculators since 1995, OneWorld ventured into producing PDAs last year. Now it exports such products to the US, Europe, Japan and Australia.

"The QWERTY keyboard, which enables one-touch access to information, and the original-design software embedded in the IC contribute to the appeal of our PDA products," says sales and business development director Fred Newcomb.

OneWorld offers its own branded series: MerlinBasic (ML1000) with 16Kb memory and MerlinAdvanced (ML2000) with 48Kb memory, both equipped with standard PDA features. Other models feature a 10-second voice recorder. Prices start at US$2.75 FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order is 5,000 units for shipment within 40 days.

Materials from Taiwan (ABS) and South Korea (ICs) are used in production at a 300- worker factory in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland. The company can also create exclusive designs for customers' specific needs.

"We manufacture up to 100,000 PDAs a month," adds Newcomb. OneWorld markets aggressively on a global scale through advertising and trade shows.

Established in 1977, IDT Int'l Ltd is known for its wide range of electronic personal information items, learning and telecoms products under the Oregon Scientific brand. Europe is its biggest market (70%).

"Our PDAs, with numerous digital assistant features and highly sensitive touch-panels, are super user-friendly," says product manager James Lau. "Besides perfecting functions, we strive for distinctive styling."

According to Lau, all the PDAs are designed with metallic casing for a high-end appeal.

A credit-card-sized touch-screen model (PDA293, with 1Mb memory) costs US$29 FOB Hong Kong. Model PDA183 (with 12Kb memory and standard PDA functions) is priced at US$14.50, while the flash-memory touch-screen PDA298 (with 1Mb memory and handwriting recognition) costs US$36.

In Guangdong Province, IDT has a one-million-square-foot factory employing 6,000 workers and producing 100,000 PDAs each month. Aluminium from Europe and ICs from Taiwan or Japan are used.

IDT has ISO 9002 certification. Minimum order is 1,000 pieces with shipment 75-90 days after order confirmation.

Styling is also important at REAC Electronic Co Ltd. Its latest data banks have a modern, streamlined silhouette, says marketing executive Jacqueline Lai.

REAC began making electronic timepieces and other consumer products in 1996. Responding to market demand, the company expanded to electronic data banks last year. Now it produces up to 450,000 data banks a month at its 600-worker factory in Guangdong Province. Main markets are Japan (40%), Germany and the US.

"Our R&D department and marketing team provide efficient and effective services to customers, while our production facility promises high quality and prompt delivery," says Lai.

REAC fills OEM and ODM orders for the low- to middle-end market. Model OT12 (a touch-screen data bank of 8Mb memory) costs US$4.20 FOB Hong Kong and the OT13 version (with 2Mb memory) is US$3.20.

Minimum order is 1,000 units for shipment within 45 days of order confirmation.

Established in 1985, Worldpole Electronics Ltd specializes in electronic premiums and plastic injection products for sale in Europe and the US. Its sales team travels overseas up to five times a year to meet buyers and keep track of market trends.

"With our in-house software department, we can pursue market trends quickly to design specifically what customers need. It also helps to save R&D costs, keeping our prices attractive," says marketing manager Simon Lee.

He says prices for electronic data banks have dropped slightly due to high popularity with consumers.

Model WP-HB03DB (a key-chain touch-screen data bank) costs US$2 FOB Hong Kong, while pocket-sized touch-screen data banks - models WP-HB01DB and WP-HB02DB - are US$4.

Worldpole has ISO 9000 certification and its 1,500-worker factory in Guangdong Province produces up to one million data banks monthly. LCDs and ICs are imported from Taiwan, while ABS comes from the Chinese mainland.

Minimum order is 1,000-5,000 pieces, depending on stock availability and unit price. Shipment is within 35-45 days.

Electronic Cameras

Focus Products Co Ltd offers a multi-function motor-drive camera with a cassette player (right) and a digital compact camera (left).

FOR years, Hong Kong-based camera manufacturers have enjoyed a strong reputation for combining quality and innovation. In the age of electronic cameras, this situation endures as they offer a wide variety - ranging from snap-happy disposable shooters to top-quality SLR and digital models.

Focus Products Co Ltd makes and exports cameras under the Focus brand. "We are well known in the US market," says company representative Lee Yuen Han. Sales are also strong in Europe (especially Germany) and Mexico.

This ISO 9002-certified company has 20 years' experience in camera production. Staying abreast of new designs and technology allows the company to maintain a strong client base.

"Our design team ensures we remain competitive. For example, we have three digital-camera models that are already strong sellers," Lee says.

The VGA Cam (model DC-30) is a dual-function PC/digital camera with a 24-bit colour sensor, 640x480 pixel VAG and CIF solutions, as well as a USB PC interface. The unit cost is US$22 FOB Hong Kong.

A new model, the DC-10 Cute Cam, is a pocket-sized digital camera featuring 256x256 pixels and an RS 232 interface. Price is available on request.

Other items include the V-3000 motor-drive camera with cassette player (US$20 per unit FOB Hong Kong), SM-22 multi-use cartridge camera (US$3) and OL-9002V deluxe automatic camera kit (US$10). Minimum order value is US$5,000. Finished products are shipped within 30 days.

Achiever Industries Ltd is an ISO 9001-certified enterprise with a 30,000-square-metre factory on the Chinese mainland making about 50,000 cameras monthly. It offers single-use, digital, security and compact models.

"Our major markets are the US, which accounts for nearly half our business, Europe and Asia. We hope to enter the Chinese mainland market," says general manager Priscilla Chan.

"We keep prices competitive while continuously focusing on the quality of materials and workmanship."

The company creates under its own Achiever brand and on an OEM basis. Demand for its digital cameras is growing, although most business still involves traditional models.

The Achiever-brand digital-stills camera, model ADC-65, costs US$15 per unit FOB Hong Kong. A VGA dual-mode digital camera (ADC-350mini) is US$28. The more basic single-use camera with flash costs US$3. Minimum order is for 3,000 pieces, with shipment after 45 days.

More Charm Ltd, the Hong Kong affiliate of Taiwan's Poly-Optics Industries Ltd, has more than 20 years' experience in designing and producing cameras.

"Our models include motorized compact cameras, premium/gift cameras, digital cameras and professional passport-photo cameras," says marketing executive Irene Chan.

"Thanks to inventive engineering, tight quality control and good after-sales service, our company can produce corporate premium cameras for several world-renowned brands."

More Charm's standard range carries the Aryca brand. This ISO 9001-certified company also does substantial OEM business with international partners.

One specialized camera is the Aryca Econo Identification Solution (model ID-100) which uses instant or traditional film to produce images suitable for identification purposes in just one minute.

More Charm's most recent ID camera is the professional ID/sport camera (model ID-3002Pro). A full brochure is available on request. Minimum order is 1,000 pieces for shipment within 30 days.

Vivitar (Asia) Ltd needs no introduction to camera markets, says marketing manager Simon Yip. This 13-year-old OEM producer makes an extensive range of cameras, lenses, flash units and tripods popular in southern Asia.

"We are especially well known for auto and manual lenses. Vivitar has a very popular range of compact and single-lens reflex cameras," says Yip.

The company's 38-140mm compact zoom camera (model PZ575DB) costs HK$1,050 (US$135) FOB Hong Kong, while the 38-90mm compact zoom (550PZ DB) is HK$680 (US$87) FOB Hong Kong.

One of the newest models is the 2.1 mega-pixel digital camera (Vivicam 3635) with a 11/2-inch LCD, 3x optical zoom and 2x digital zoom with SD and/or MMC multimedia cards. The cost is HK$1,800 (US$231) FOB Hong Kong.

"Our brand is a guarantee of good quality at competitive prices. On top, we offer worldwide service," says Yip.

Home Telephones

Olistar Technology Ltd's latest creations include a range of cyber-feel telephones that function equally well as calendars and calculators.

IN the past 25 years, home telephones have come a long way. New models are inexpensive, relatively simple to make and widely varied in shape, size and colour. Hong Kong-based enterprises design and produce corded or cordless models ranging from sophisticated desk units to fun phones resembling Mickey Mouse or other notable characters.

Launched in 1984, Wang Sing Electronic (Int'l) Ltd employs 1,800 skilled workers at its factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. This supplier offers corded, cordless and DECT phones for sale under its own Telsda brand to Asian markets like Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.

In Taiwan, Wang Sing sells to Solomon and Koka, both acting as agents for NEC, Sanyo and Philips. In Hong Kong, this producer has supplied phones to major banks like HSBC and Standard Chartered as premium incentives for credit-card promotions.

DECT model TS-1803 costs US$99 FOB Hong Kong while caller-ID corded model TS-488 is a more modest US$5. Monthly production capacity exceeds 100,000 units. Minimum orders of 1,000 pieces can be shipped within 25-30 days.

The DECT cordless phone has a range of more than 500 metres. "This is one of the longest-range cordless phones on the market. We take pride in our high quality arising from dedication to engineering and technological excellence. CPUs for our cordless products are written by our own engineers," says marketing executive Ody Hui.

Olistar Technology Ltd focuses on designing and producing phones as premiums. Its factories in Bao'an and Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland employ 500 workers to make about 5,000 units per month in each popular line.

Calendar/calculator telephone models OT-213 and OT-2111 cost US$4.30 and US$5.50 FOB Hong Kong respectively.

"Normally, we accept minimum orders of 3,000 units, but are prepared to be flexible because our long-term goals include developing business with clients wishing to work with us as part of their team," says manager Jimmy Chong.

"Supplying the corporate-gifts market means we must produce distinctive phones of consistently high quality while ensuring our customers' needs are properly addressed. Our price for placing client logos on phones can be as little as US$0.10 per unit."

Olistar's major markets are the US, India and United Arab Emirates. It sells under Olistar or Tessy brands.

Since 1989, Citi Sound Electronic Ltd has produced corded and cordless phones at its 1,200-worker factory in Bao'an on the Chinese mainland. The company uses raw materials (mainly ICs and ABS) from South Korea and the US. Its Citisonic brand appears in Europe, Asia and North America.

Model CS-9984, a caller-ID phone with three languages, costs US$8-10 FOB Hong Kong while mini cordless phone model V7CID is US$20-25. Other models have such features as reading lamps and answering machines. All are available in various colours.

Total production capacity exceeds 300,000 units per month. "Minimum orders normally start at 1,000 pieces and can be shipped within 4-6 weeks," says manager Alex Yeung.

"Our telephones are technically superior because of our commitment to research and development, along with our high-quality in-house design specialists," Yeung says.

At a 250-worker factory in Shenzhen, Yuenkei Industrial Co Ltd specializes in caller-ID phones. Major markets are Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam and Taiwan, as well as Europe and South America. Shipment is usually within 30 days.

Caller-ID models ART-896CID, ART-ID600 and ART-813 cost US$2.75-5.00 per unit FOB Hong Kong.

"We have a number of brands, such as Techcom, Great, TOT, Wiscom, Akita, Hopewell, Nikoon, Senao and Magala, under which we sell worldwide. We also offer Senao-brand OEM products in Taiwan, primarily as third-party incentive premiums," says sales manager Alex Tam.

Using ICs and ABS from Taiwan and the Chinese mainland, Yuenkei produces 150,000 units monthly in each major line.

"Our dedicated R & D and engineering departments ensure we deliver top-quality products at highly competitive prices - which is the type of service our customers expect," says Tam.
