Fee Tat Holdings (HK) Ltd's portable power source with a fluorescent lantern, blinker and spotlight helps in any roadside emergency.

DRIVERS in all major markets create buoyant sales opportunities for the latest and most innovative automotive accessories. As primary sources for such accessories, Hong Kong companies enjoy reputations for satisfying even the most demanding customers.

After 40 years of producing electronic equipment, Good Hope Industries Ltd has achieved annual capacity of 1.5 million units across its range of gauges, compressors, vacuum cleaners and car polishers, all meeting UL and CE approval.

"Our pressure gauges are very popular. They include those for family cars and for larger vehicles. We have our own range under the Boreas label and also do OEM and ODM manufacturing for high-profile brand names in the US and Europe," says sales and marketing manager Jason Chow.

Good Hope offers model 12-132, a 12V, heavy-duty, 300-psi compressor for RVs or trucks, with a built-in mechanical gauge, work-light/flashlight, anti-slip rubber handle and horizontal or vertical standing. The unit price is US$10.80 FOB Hong Kong.

One of the newest products is model 12-498, a detachable digital gauge with preset pressure function and built-in work-light. The unit cost is US$13 FOB Hong Kong. Prices are based on a minimum order of 1,000 pieces per model for shipment 40-60 days after order confirmation.

"Our factory on the Chinese mainland implements the highest quality standards. Good Hope has ISO 9001 and ISO 9002 certification," Chow says.

Established in 1974, Amptek Industries Ltd produces a wide range of electronic goods like vacuum cleaners and polishers at its 18,000-square-foot factory on the Chinese mainland. The company's Hong Kong offices handle sales and marketing.

"We are a very flexible company working mainly on an OEM basis for customers in Europe, Australia, Japan and the US," says director KW Lau.

Amptek's most popular products include a 12V wet/dry car vacuum cleaner (model VC1200) at US$6 per unit, a 12V car mini-vacuum cleaner (VC312) at US$3.50, and a 12V car polisher (CP712) at US$5.80. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.

Model VC1200 has a long power cord, permanent dust filter, crevice tool, wet nozzle and large dust compartment. Model VC312 features a 12-foot power cord, strong suction, crevice tool and brush. This product fits conveniently inside most glove compartments.

"Compactness makes the VC312 popular in Japan while the wet/dry VC1200 sells well in Europe," says Lau.

Minimum order is 500-1,000 pieces, depending on the model. Shipments are ready 45-65 days after order confirmation.

Sun Fat Holding Co Ltd has discovered a niche making in-car coolers and warmers for food or drinks. Founded in 1978, this enterprise offers numerous electronics goods from its factory on the Chinese mainland.

"We are a flexible manufacturer meeting all the needs of our customers while paying strict attention to quality," says marketing director CP Wong. Sun Fat's modern factory has 3,000 workers creating products for such main markets as the US, Europe and the Middle East.

Customers react positively to model SF-285B, a cooler/warmer with an eight-inch oscillating fan and light priced at US$21; MR108, a small cooler/warmer with a window at US$26; and the windowless MR108A at US$25. All unit prices are FOB Hong Kong and based on 1,000-unit minimum orders for shipment 25-30 days after order confirmation.

"These are relatively new products for use indoors or out and powered by cigarette-lighter sockets, adaptors or external supplies," Wong says. "We have our own popular brand, Sunca, while also doing OEM work."

Emergency lights are often called accessories, but can prove essential. For more than 30 years, Alliance Industrial Co Ltd has created lights of all sorts. The company has an 850-worker factory on the Chinese mainland.

"Our auto emergency lights are very successful. We export one FEU per month to customers in Europe and Japan," says sales manager Wylie Lai.

The products include magnetic light model 7406 at US$1, detachable model 7407 at US$2 and memo-light model 7410 at US$1. All prices are FOB Hong Kong per piece.

Alliance strives to combine innovation and quality. The magnetic light runs off cigarette-lighter sockets or rechargeable batteries, the detachable light doubles as a torch and the memo model is a useful illuminated writing board.

Minimum orders depend on the model. Shipments are ready 40 days after order confirmation.

Jacks Of All Trades

Multi-Purpose Radios

A yellow all-weather, water-resistant radio/cassette player with torch (left) from Manwa Electronics Mfg Ltd is aimed at the sports market.

AS the ubiquitous radio continues to fend off competition from TV and the Internet, manufacturers in Hong Kong are using creativity to produce multi-purpose models offering useful options.

Brilliant Rich Electronics Ltd, after more than 16 years in the business, focuses on portable AM/FM radio combinations. The company also owns an ISO 9000-certified subsidiary making high-end CD and DVD players.

"Our mass-market business is radios for just about anywhere," says marketing manager Tony Ng. "We have elegant models for homes, fun models for the young and specialized items for showers, kitchens and even the beach."

Typical of the range is model 902B, a handy five-in-one AM/FM radio with a torch, fan, siren and LCD alarm clock. Dimensions are 318x90x85mm, and packing is by bubble bag and individual gift box.

Available in any solid colour, the 902B unit price is about US$3.70 FOB Hong Kong based on a minimum quantity of one TEU (about 6,800 pieces). Batteries (UM3x6) are extra.

Equally popular and versatile is model 2020, an all-weather AM/FM headlight radio that comes in a standard two-in-one format and offers combinations up to five-in-one. Options include a compass, bicycle bracket, LCD clock (with or without alarm), LCD clock (no alarm) with digital thermometer and siren.

Available in any solid colour, this model has a unit price (for standard execution) of US$2.35 FOB Hong Kong based on a 3,000-piece minimum order. Batteries (UM3x2) are extra, the dimensions are 118x110x67mm, and the packing is by bubble bag in white boxes.

Main markets are the US and Western Europe, with increasing demand from Eastern Europe.

"This year we should sell more football-theme radios because of the World Cup. We have a complete range at US$1-3 FOB Hong Kong, depending on options," says Ng.

Serving the premiums market, Ausbon Industrial Ltd has an ISO 9001-certified factory concentrating on radio/digital, thermometer/digital projector-clock combinations. Other items include calculators, digital cameras and a football-shaped desktop digital thermometer.

"Our best-selling models are the radio-projector combinations, AB-0568-2 and -3," says marketing manager Amanda Chan.

"At the heart of these designs are digital clocks with built-in projectors for time-viewing on external surfaces like ceilings or walls. They also come with digital thermometers and AM/FM radios. Date is an optional feature."

The AB-0568-2 projector clock with thermometer/auto scan AM/FM radio sells for US$4.20 FOB Hong Kong. Major functions include time projector, alarm clock with timer, Celsius/Fahrenheit display and snooze/backlight. It is also available without the radio.

Model AB-0568-3 is similar, but with a much larger display. This version costs $4.50 FOB Hong Kong each and is also available minus the radio.

"Minimum order for this range is 3,000 per design. Shipment is 30-45 days from order receipt," adds Chan.

For customers needing products with distinctive designs, Oxygen Ltd offers a complete catalogue with everything from DVD players to microsystems, portable radios and clock radios.

The multi-purpose radios include popular model RCT-156, an AM/FM clock radio with temperature. "This is compact with an easy-to-read LCD display, world-time function and choice of buzzer or radio wake-up alarm," says product manager Stella Ng. The dimensions are 165x75x52mm.

"Model CRW-139 is a more traditional shape, with a larger LCD panel, a world map for different time zones and a light for easy reading," she adds. Dimensions of this AM/FM model are 160x80x39mm.

"Both these models are available in various attractive colours," Ng says.

Another successful offering is model RCT-143, an AM/FM radio-clock-temperature combination with world time, a light and wake-to-radio or wake-to-buzzer options. The dimensions are 120x86x125mm.

"We offer four colours," Ng says. The prices for multi-purpose radios are US$5-8 FOB Hong Kong. Usual shipment time is 30-45 days after order confirmation. Minimum order is 3,000 units per model.

Co-Tech Industrial (Holdings) Ltd offers a huge range of mini, micro and portable electronic items. Eye-catching designs and functionality are standard.

"Our products are designed not just to follow trends, but also to set them," says marketing manager Karen Sin. "However, we are also very active in OEM projects."

One popular multi-purpose radio is model CT-788, a robust battery-operated AM radio-torch combination. Other features include a flexible antenna, siren with a flashing light and optional LCD alarm clock. The dimensions are 195x152x115mm.

For something different, model CT-120 excels. This is an AM/FM projector-clock-radio. Time display is via LED projection with an adjustable angle feature and dual-time functions. Available in battery or AC versions, this model measures 120x100x119mm.

In an interesting departure from tradition, the ellipse-shaped model CT-833 is an outstanding clock radio with a large LCD panel, calendar, date and time functions. The alarm is by radio or buzzer, and there is a snooze function. Other options include a built-in digital thermometer. The dimensions are 60x67x50mm.

"Prices are available on enquiry," says Sin. Usual shipment time is 30-45 days after order confirmation. Minimum order is for 2,000 units per model.

Talking Electronics

Win-Chance Metal Fty Ltd received such a strong response to its recorder key-chains, it now produces 100 models to record and replay messages.

MODERN gadgets are capable of considerably more than calculating, storing and processing data. Many can talk about the information. Talking calculators, alarm systems and clocks are among the many devices capable of speaking out, in case the users lack time or inclination to read displays.

C & L Elegance Mfy Ltd makes alarm clocks that announce the time in eight languages. Shaped like miniature racing helmets, these time-tellers can give hourly announcements, have three alarm sounds and stick easily to most surfaces. The unit price is US$3.10 FOB Hong Kong.

"We produce different items and come up with many designs. Our products include clocks, watches, timers, calculators and voice recorders. We have our own Galason brand and come out with about six new lines per year," says export manager Barbara Chui.

Founded in 1984, C & L employs 300 workers at its 40,000-square-foot factory in Shanwei on the Chinese mainland.

"We export to the US, Europe, the Middle East and the Far East," says Chui. Minimum order is 5,000 pieces per item for shipment 30 days after order confirmation.

Win-Chance Metal Fty Ltd offers sleek silver key-chains that record and replay messages. Founded in 1961 as a gifts and premium manufacturer, Win-Chance began making electronic gifts two years ago.

"To develop our general key-chain line, we added this electronic feature and had a very positive response," says administrative manager Flora Yau.

"Twenty people in our design department develop 40-50 types of products. We have about 100 models of the recorder key-chain alone."

Win-Chance produces OEM and ODM items at its 2,000-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. Prices for its own Fly Horse and Heredes brands are in the mid-range. Minimum order for OEM items is 3,000 pieces. For a factory-design product, the minimum order is 200 pieces. Shipment is after 45 days.

"We have 40 years' experience and some very long-term relationships with clients. We apply high standards, achieve consistent quality and provide the best possible service," says Yau. In 1998, Win-Chance secured ISO 9001 certification.

Leeds Electronic Engineering Ltd specializes in security alarm systems. "We started in 1973 making small buzzer and siren alarms. Now we have two product levels. Some systems are very sophisticated while others are user-friendly DIY types," says general manager Michael Lui.

"The DIY type, like our security alarm dialler system, has professional-type features, but does not require a specialist to install," adds Lui. The system automatically dials up to three pre-programmed numbers and plays a 20-second message alerting users at the other end about the emergency.

"This is a wireless system that is highly reliable, avoiding false alarms," says Lui. The security alarm dialler system costs US$28 FOB Hong Kong while an auto voice dialler system is US$22. Minimum order is 200-1,000 pieces for shipment within 3-7 weeks.

"We have eight engineers busy at research and development. Since we understand all components of security, we do the entire security system, including sensor detectors, control elements and dialler-alarm units. We are like a one-stop shop so our prices are very competitive," says Lui.

Leeds uses its own name as a brand and produces in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. Leading markets include the UK, Australia, France, Italy, the US and Germany.

Talking caller-ID phones are a great way to screen calls without lingering by the telephone. Lucky Source Enterprise Ltd makes such phones to speak to callers in different languages.

"We have English, Arabic, Japanese and Mandarin, and we develop the language features according to demand," says general manager Gabbie Ng.

The talking caller-ID phones have speakerphone and calculator functions. "We have about 10 people on our research and design team, and we produce quality products at reasonable prices. Our follow-up service is good, and we do repair and maintenance work if there are problems," says Ng.

The 17-year-old company's 300-worker factory in Shenzhen produces 200,000-300,000 units monthly. Minimum order is 2,000 pieces for shipment within 20-25 days.

For Catiga Electronics Co Ltd, talking calculators are hot items. "Our calculators tell the time, date and calculation results in Mandarin. This is a very popular product, and we are developing an English version too," says marketing manager Jessica Tang.

The speaking calculator costs US$4.55 FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order is 2,000 pieces, and shipment time is within 45 days.

Founded in 1985, Catiga Electronics has a 1,200-worker factory on the Chinese mainland producing one million units per month. "We export mainly to the Chinese mainland, Taiwan and Southeast Asia," says Tang.

With the growing number of helpful talking gadgets on the market, consumers should benefit from plenty of verbal advice.
