Silicone Rubber Parts

COMPONENTS made with silicone rubber are essential in numerous consumer goods. Naturally, Hong Kong companies play an important role in the global supply.

Luen Fung Silicone Rubber Mfg Co offers a conductive rubber keypad priced at US$0.30 FOB Hong Kong. Another keypad, one with epoxy coating, is US$0.60. Both are used in telephones and electronic goods.

Sales manager Leo Lam says the epoxy-coated version is more hi-tech and longer lasting.

Luen Fung also makes a conductive keypad (for databanks) at US$0.30. A laser-etched keypad is US$0.50. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.

"The laser-etched keypad is translucent and used mostly in mobile phones," Lam says.

Founded in 1988, Luen Fung is an OEM specialist each month producing five million pieces, including conductive keypads, O-rings and gaskets. The silicone comes mainly from Toshiba in Japan.

Luen Fung employs 200 workers at a 2,000-square-metre factory in the Chinese mainland's southern boomtown of Shenzhen. Minimum order is 500 units, with delivery time 1-2 weeks after confirmation. The main markets are in Europe.

You Eal (HK) Ltd makes conductive interconnectors, keypads and mobile-phone keypads. One of its latest products is a folding keyboard. "This is foldable, convenient, portable and connects to a WAP phone or PDA for data input," says sales manager Samuel Cheung.

The company also produces laser marking rubber pads for remote controls. "These are translucent, waterproof, hi-tech products," Cheung notes.

In addition, You Eal creates keypads for mobile phones and waterproof rubber rings for clocks. Other silicone products from You Eal serve a host of purposes in walkie-talkies, CD players and health products.

You Eal sources high-quality silicone rubber from the US and Japan. Its minimum orders and lead times depend on product complexity. "For standard items, delivery time can be within 2-3 days," Cheung says.

Components bearing the You Eal brand sell to various markets, including Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Europe and the US. Among the customers are leading international names like Samsung, Motorola and LG.

You Eal (HK) began in 1986 as a branch of South Korea's You Eal Electronics Co Ltd, now 23 years old.

"With our considerable experience, we can offer customers advice about product design so their products are more competitive," Cheung says.

The group's factories in Shenzhen and South Korea employ more than 1,000 people. The Korean factories are ISO 9001 certified. In both 1999 and 2000, You Eal captured Hong Kong Electronics Association awards for its product innovation.

Modern Metal & Electric Ltd is an OEM producer tailor-making silicone rubber keypads and other items for use in mobile phones, remote controls, computer keyboards, cars and elsewhere.

"Our products meet most high-end requirements. Our buyers are international companies and hi-tech establishments," says sales and marketing manager Philip Chan.

Established in 1969, Modern Metal & Electric applies the ISO 9001 and QS 9000 quality management systems. Its in-house services include tooling design and high-precision mould-making.

"We can make different kinds of coating, including PU, epoxy and matt. We also do plastic and silicone rubber co-moulding. We are one of the few Asian companies outside Japan capable of this," Chan notes.

The co-moulded keypads can be used for mobile phones. "Existing customers use them for digital diaries," Chan adds.

"Furthermore, our research section has come up with a new development to extend legend life."

Using raw material from Japan and the US, the company makes 6-8 million silicone rubber items per month at its 1,500-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. Minimum order is 1,000 units. Normal lead time is 2-3 weeks. Europe and the US are the major markets.

At Yan Chuen Co Ltd, a laser-etched silicone rubber keypad (model YC-1605) sells for about US$0.52 FOB Hong Kong. A metallic-coated silicone keypad (YC-1238) is US$0.21 FOB Hong Kong.

"These are for use in mobile phones, vehicles and other equipment," says sales manager Ivy Cheung.

A keypad for databanks (YC-1669) costs US$0.62. A keypad with a membrane keyboard for use in cabs is US$3.60, while a silicon rubber gasket for waterproof torches is US$0.40. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.

Each month, 14-year-old Yan Chuen produces 20,000kg of keypads and other products using silicone rubber from Japan. Its ISO 9002-certified factory in Shenzhen employs 150 workers.

The minimum order is negotiable. Delivery time follows 14 days after confirmation. The company sells worldwide, including to the US and Europe.

Smaller The Better

Crystal Products

THE world of electronic components changes as crystal products become smaller and more compact to fit inside similarly shrinking electronic and telecoms devices. Hong Kong companies are making all the necessary adjustments to meet this challenge of diminishing size.

Thirteen-year-old Chequers Electronic (China) Ltd, an ISO 9002-certified maker of quartz crystals, ceramic resonators and filters, is shifting its emphasis toward smaller quartz crystal SMDs. Featured is model SMD 0705 measuring 7x5mm and priced at US$0.40-0.60 FOB Hong Kong. Just off the production line is an even smaller version, SMD 0603, measuring 6x3mm, at US$0.45-0.65.

"With manufacturers wanting smaller components, we will increase our production of smaller quartz crystal SMDs by 30% in the next few months," says senior sales manager Tony Tang.

Among the other Chequers crystal products are types HC-49/U at US$0.13-0.40, HC-49S at US$0.15-0.19, HC-49S-SMD at US$0.18-0.30 and UM1 at US$0.38-0.55. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.

The company produces four million pieces each month at its 330-worker, 45,000-square-metre factory in Hubei on the Chinese mainland. Its products are used in the telecom, TV and audio sectors. Minimum order is 1,000 pieces, and delivery to major markets like Europe, the US, South Korea and the Chinese mainland is after 28 days. Raw materials come from the mainland, Japan and South Korea.

Fifteen-year-old Gen-Worldly Quartz Crystal Co is a true manufacturer in every sense. All parts of its crystal products - from bases to covers - are made in-house. The company employs 200 people at its 30,000-square-foot factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. Monthly production is six million pieces.

"This is the best way to control quality. Without doing the pre-assembly, we would be like a car manufacturer buying pre-assembled cars. We could control the tires and outside frame, but not the most important thing - the engine," says sales manager Eddie Cheung.

Full in-house production, with quartz crystals as the sole product, allows Gen-Worldly to achieve a fast delivery standard of seven days. The minimum order is 10,000 pieces.

The products include types HC-49U priced at US$0.11-0.15 and HC-49S at US$0.12-0.18 FOB Hong Kong. Gen-Worldly's output is used in telecom and computer equipment.

Cheung explains that high quality raw materials are essential to prevent leakage that creates oxidation. Gen-Worldly sources raw materials from Japan, while its main markets are Japan, Europe, the US and the Chinese mainland.

Hong Kong X'tals Ltd, a 10-year-old manufacturer, also stresses small size. "We are putting together some new packages that will be smaller and consume less power," says operations manager Rex Wong.

Featured are types HC-49U and HC-49US priced at US$0.12-0.50 FOB Hong Kong. The company's crystal products sell to the automotive, telecoms, computers and electronics sectors.

For Hong Kong X'tals, which also makes oscillators, its most important achievement is QS 9000 certification achieved in 1999. "Very few companies have this certificate," says Wong. The company is also ISO 9002-certified.

Monthly production at the company's 800-worker Shenzhen factory is 8.5 million pieces. Raw materials come from Japan, South Korea and the Chinese mainland, while the main markets are Europe, the US, the Chinese mainland and Japan. Minimum order is 1,000 pieces with delivery after 28-35 days.

Through a sister company, the crystal testing and measuring house Kolinker Industrial Equipments Ltd, Hong Kong X'tals also supplies equipment to other manufacturers.

Weltronics Component Ltd, a 21-year-old enterprise, gains a competitive advantage by eliminating minimum order requirements. "We do this so we can assist different companies, some needing small orders," says product manager Suzie So. Delivery time is after 28-42 days.

Shown in the accompanying photo is a variety of products used in the telecom and audio industries and priced at US$0.12-0.50 FOB Hong Kong.

Weltronics' monthly production capacity of nine million pieces is expected to surge by another 40,000 with the development of new packages TCXO, VCXO and VCTCXO. Weltronics gained ISO 9002 certification in 1995.

In addition to a 900-worker factory in the northern Chinese mainland, Weltronics has after-sales offices in the mainland cities of Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, Chengdu and Xiamen.

"Since Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland are our main markets, we can offer our customers very fast after-sales service," So says.

Basic Essentials

Transistors & Diodes

Transistors and diodes are used extensively in electronic products, ranging from televisions, radios and toys through to computers and telecoms items.

Since 1985, Golden Sing Industrial Co has produced various components, such as transistors, diodes, capacitors, resistors, LEDs and PVC tubing.

"Our transistors and diodes are used primarily for home appliances and toys. We set ourselves apart by combining quality and competitive prices, and we have our own Diode FS brand," says manager Dacre Wong.

With a large factory employing 300 skilled workers in Guangdong Province, plus other subcontractors on the Chinese mainland, Golden Sing produces 20 million transistors and diodes per month.

"We buy materials, such as silicon wafers and copper, from Europe, the US and the Chinese mainland. The price-points of buyers' orders naturally affect our choices in sourcing materials," Wong explains.

The ISO 9000-certified company sells to the markets of Southeast Asia, India, Europe and the US. The minimum order is 20,000 units, with delivery after 15-30 days, depending on whether it is high or low season.

Incorporated in 1988, Sider Electronic Industries Ltd has distributed Semtech diodes and transistors for five years. Its mainland factory makes transformers and inductors.

"Nowadays, competing strictly on price is very difficult. While offering consistent products and prompt delivery, we provide value-added services," says marketing manager Louis Chan.

"Our technical support team takes a pro-active role in suggesting cost-effective applications for our products. Our established relationship with Semtech allows us to develop special transistors, helping customers to reduce costs," adds Chan.

For Sider, the Chinese mainland is the major market for diodes and transistors, which account for nearly 90% of the company's sales volume.

"The purchasing power of mainland factories is strong because many overseas buyers have shifted sourcing networks there," says Chan.

The ISO 9002-certified Sider has no minimum order. If stock is available, delivery is immediate. As for specially-made items, the minimum order is 10,000 units, with delivery after 30 days.

Established in 1966, Y-Sing Components Ltd is a trading enterprise offering a wide selection of ICs, transistors and regulators. The company specializes in three major brands, Fairchild, Samsung and SGS-Thomson, while also selling its own YS label.

"Our diodes and transistors are known for high quality and competitive prices. Our after-sales service, including 100% replacement, also wins loyal customers," says general manager Spencer Ngai.

Although the Chinese mainland, the company's traditional market, accounts for most of its sales, Y-Sing is expanding fast to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe and South America since adopting e-commerce last year.

"We have a strong, 22-member overseas sales team. While selling diodes and transistors to the Chinese mainland, we also export to Brazil, Argentina, Russia, India and elsewhere," says Ngai.

The ISO 9000-certified company requires a 10,000-unit minimum order. Because it maintains substantial stock, delivery is often immediate.

Eleven-year-old Turbo Time Enterprises Co Ltd makes LEDs, infrared emitting diodes and receiver modules and other components for PCB assembly. It also distributes Sancon transistors and diodes.

"We are the sole distributor of Sancon transistors and diodes in Hong Kong. Using materials from Japan and South Korea, these products are known for high quality," says assistant general manager Stephen Ng.

"Diodes and transistors are the very basic components of electronic products. Many of our clients are toy-makers, while some produce home appliances and audio equipment."

With a sales and marketing team adept in the Hong Kong and Chinese mainland markets, Turbo Time finds its business well dispersed there. It also exports to elsewhere in Asia, to Europe and the US.

The company will launch new designs during the Hong Kong Electronics Fair from 15-18 October.

"We have developed new models for applications in toys and electronic appliances. I'm sure the innovations will arouse interest among overseas buyers," says Ng.

The company meets UL quality standards. For overseas orders, the minimum is 10,000 units. Delivery takes two weeks following order confirmation.
