LEDs & LCDs

A COMPREHENSIVE range of LEDs and LCDs from Hong Kong-based manufacturers serves the needs of the global electronics industry.

Clover Display Ltd, established in 1983, is a joint venture involving Hong Kong and Japanese enterprises. The ISO 9002-certified company employs more than 700 workers at its Hong Kong head office and factory and at its two factories on the Chinese mainland.

"We produce models of LCD panels and modules suitable for use in any type of electronic display," says Clover Display sales and marketing manager Clara Leung. That includes TN, HTN, STN, FSTN, SSCT (bi-stable LCD), ECB colour LCD, shaped LCDs, SMT, COB, TAB and COG.

While placing strong emphasis on quality control, Clover Display imports high-quality raw materials, including glass from Taiwan, polarizers from Japan and liquid crystal from Europe and Japan.

The company welcomes OEM orders and provides potential customers with a comprehensive checklist for custom-designed LCD modules. Its major markets are Japan, Europe and the US. Delivery of LCD panels takes four weeks; LCD modules take 5-6 weeks.

Globe Technology (HK) Ltd is a Hong Kong-Taiwan joint venture operating in Hong Kong since 1990. Its products include LED lamps, seven-segment LED displays, LED dot-matrix displays and LCD backlights. The company is developing its receiver module.

"We constantly develop our product line. In such a competitive business, it is important for us to continually focus on changing market needs. What's more, Asian companies have the technology of the West, but can offer much more competitive prices," says Globe overseas marketing manager Richard Ho.

The ISO 9002-certified company has an office in Hong Kong and a factory on the Chinese mainland, where it employs more than 800 people, including 50 technicians. The factory is equipped with fully automatic die-attaching machines, wire-bonding machines, epoxy-dipping lines and state-of-the-art testing equipment. Minimum order is 5,000 pieces per model, and the company delivers within two weeks.

Strong Base Electronic Fty Ltd has manufactured LEDs since 1985 and produces lamps for most electronic products.

"We welcome orders of any size. Most of our business is from our extensive range of standard LED lamps, LED displays, LED dot matrix and LED clusters, although we also tailor-make products if our customers need this," says general manager Daisy Ng.

The company's manufacturing operations are based on the Chinese mainland at a 60,000-square-metre factory with 1,500 workers and ISO 9002 certification.

"Because most orders are for our standard LED products, we promise fast turnaround of 1-2 weeks, although this will be longer for special orders," says Ng. Using chips from Taiwan, Strong Base manufactures for Asian markets and for export to the US and Europe.

Sam Sun Development (HK) Ltd, founded in 1988, has become a significant exporter of LCDs, LCD modules, ITO touch panels and LCD backlights.

"Recently, Europe has been a very strong market for us, and there is a great demand for our EL plate, which supports the backlight of LCDs," explains general manager Sam Ip. Sam Sun manufactures at a 50,000-square-foot mainland factory employing 300 workers.

"Our customers demand the highest quality, and our products are checked at all stages of the manufacturing process. We source our raw materials from Japan and Europe, and we have ISO 9002 certification," says Ip.

Sam Sun specializes in custom-made products and can deliver within 30-45 days of order confirmation. Minimum order is 5,000 pieces per model.

Casil Semiconductor Ltd has manufactured LCD panels and modules since 1980 (prior to 1994 under the name Conic Semiconductor Ltd) and has a significant customer base in Hong Kong, the US, the UK, Singapore and Japan.

"We produce two types of LCD - TN and HTN - and are developing STN LCDs, which we hope to manufacture from the middle of 2001. Samples are now available," says assistant general manager Harry Tsang.

In addition to its standard range of LCDs, Casil Semiconductor specializes in custom-made LCD panels and modules.

"These are made from raw materials imported from all over the world, including Japan, China and the US, depending on the client's specifications," says Tsang. Minimum orders depend on the required LCD type, although the minimum order value is usually US$2,000-5,000.

Casil is ISO 9001-certified and places strong emphasis on quality-control procedures at its 6,000-square-metre factory on the Chinese mainland. Delivery takes 4-6 weeks after order confirmation.

Speaker Components

JUST as speaker components are vital to modern lives in this technology age, Hong Kong suppliers play a crucial role to meet the vast demand for these electronic parts. Using cost-efficient production facilities on the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong manufacturers offer a full range of quality speaker components at competitive prices - to the delight of buyers.

Audiotech Electronic Industry Co Ltd offers car speakers and a four-way speaker system, both oval-shaped devices measuring 6x9 inches. The company's other products include a six-inch, three-way coaxial speaker system, amplifiers, graphic equalizers and subwoofers.

"These are for cars," says Audiotech marketing director Karen Tang, adding that the raw materials come from Taiwan, the Chinese mainland and South Korea.

Established in 1996, the manufacturer produces at its 200-worker mainland factory. It designs its own products, but can also work to designs supplied by customers.

Minimum orders are 1,000 pairs for speakers and 1,000 pieces for subwoofers. Delivery takes 45 days after order confirmation. Major markets are the US and Europe.

Innovation Technology Co Ltd makes Mylar speakers of different sizes, plus elements like microphones and receivers. The raw materials, such as plastic frames and steel frames, come from the Chinese mainland and Japan.

This manufacturer has operated a factory to make such products since 1986. "So we have more than 14 years of production experience and technology know-how related to Mylar speakers. We insist on quality assurance and technology improvement," says export executive Clarence Tsui.

"We offer solutions to our valuable customers, not just the speaker product itself. We have standard models. If customers need something we don't already have, we can design for them."

Innovation Technology boasts a design team of about 30 people. The company supplies a wide spectrum of items for different applications. "We can make small items, such as 10mm speakers," Tsui says.

The firm also supplies paper-cone speakers. "We have a full range from mini-types for notebook computers to high-power versions for multimedia applications," Tsui adds.

Established in 1986, Innovation Technology produces 1 million-2 million pieces per month at its factory employing 300-500 workers in Zhuhai on the Chinese mainland. The company also operates an engineering department, plus a research and development division, in nearby Shenzhen. Operations at both mainland locations are ISO 9002-certified.

Minimum order size is 3,000-5,000 units. Lead time is 3-4 weeks. Prices depend on order quantity, but most unit prices are HK$1.50-4.00 (US$0.19-0.51) FOB Hong Kong. Average quotes are HK$2-3 (US$0.26-0.38).

"Our biggest market is the US," Tsui says. America accounts for 33% of the company's sales, followed by Hong Kong at 20%, Europe at 19%, Japan at 16% and the Chinese mainland at 10%.

Another manufacturer, Can Products Co Ltd, produces Mylar speakers, loudspeakers, receivers and microphones using PVC, magnets and coils from the Chinese mainland.

"We design in such a way as to protect the speakers' structures," says sales manager Tico Chan. The company also engages in OEM.

Its products cover a wide range of sizes, with diameters of 1.5-15 inches.

Minimum order is 10,000 units, with 30 days to deliver.

Using the CPC brand, Can Products Co sells mainly to the Chinese mainland and in Hong Kong, while aiming to soon focus more on other markets. The 15-year-old company operates a 7,500-square-metre, 500-worker factory in the mainland's Zhejiang Province.

Magfield Products Co Ltd produces paper-cone speakers and super-thin Mylar-cone speakers. Founded in 1979, it operates a 2,400-square-foot, 300-worker factory in Shenzhen.

"We make high-quality items. Our products are custom-made," Magfield representative Marisa Lam says.

Delivery takes 4-6 weeks. The main markets are the US, France, the UK, Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and Hong Kong.

SENSORS, switches and other tiny devices produced by Hong Kong companies go far to keep the countless appliances and electronic products that consumers rely on operating properly.

Fordic Component Ltd's negative temperature coefficient (NTC) chip thermistors, for instance, control temperatures in products ranging from computers to personal digital assistants to portable phones.

"We make two sizes, C-10 and C-16. Except for the two standard sizes, all our chip thermistors are custom-made," says Fordic executive director Robert Hung.

The 12-year-old company exports three million pieces per month to the Chinese mainland and seeks to expand its market to Southeast Asia.

Fordic, which works with a Japanese-based firm, Shibaura Electronics Co Ltd, plans to open a joint venture factory with Shibaura in Guangdong Province, on the Chinese mainland, by the middle of this year.

"We see many opportunities in China. A lot of telecommunications companies are coming from Europe and must use this component," Hung says.

The C-10 thermistor is priced at US$0.04 per piece FOB Hong Kong, with the C-16 at US$0.05. About half the components carry Shibaura's brand, with the rest produced on an OEM or private-label basis. The minimum order is 10,000 pieces. Deliveries go out 30 days after order confirmation.

Thermal cut-offs, like Joint-Force Metal Research & Co's M-series devices, are used in numerous coiled products, such as transformers, adaptors, chargers and even electric fans.

"Our products are safety devices to prevent the items from overheating," explains Joint-Force director Ip Fai. The 22-year-old enterprise makes thermal cut-offs to meet various functioning temperatures.

"Most are standard components. Occasionally, we take custom orders," Ip adds. For orders above 100,000 pieces, the components cost US$0.04 per piece FOB Hong Kong.

Each day Joint-Force's 600 workers produce 1.3 million M-series thermal cut-offs for global export at their 60,000-square-foot factory in Guangdong Province. All components are stamped with the company's JF brand.

Hong Kong Aleph Co Ltd manufactures reed switches and sensors for products like copy machines and fax machines. Some components, such as reed switches, photo sensors or proximity sensors, activate the on/off switches, while water-level sensors do vital monitoring in air-conditioners and washing machines.

A subsidiary of a Japan-based firm, 15-year-old Hong Kong Aleph produces eight million switches and sensors monthly at its 20,000-square-metre factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland.

"Our components have a long life, we customize to meet customers' specifications and our prices are competitive," says manager of engineering Billy Chan.

Reed switches sell for US$0.20-1.00 per piece FOB Hong Kong, while photo sensors, proximity sensors and water-level sensors are US$0.50-1.00.

"About half our products are standard items, and half are customized," Chan says.

The company, which exports worldwide, enforces no minimum order. Delivery times for new customers are 60 days after order confirmation, with 30 days for repeat orders. Plans call for the company to develop new auto sensors from optical fibres.

Remote controls for televisions, hi-fis and other products account for 50% of Kyung In Electronics (HK) Ltd's sales. The company also produces on/off switches, bi-metal thermostats and potentiometers.

In business since 1989, this Hong Kong subsidiary of a Korea-based company operates as a sales office, with production facilities in Shenzhen and Tianjin on the Chinese mainland, and in Seoul, South Korea.

"Our products are known for good quality, and our prices are cheaper than for Japanese-made goods," says sales executive Jovita Chung.

Each month Kyung In Electronics produces about 700,000 remote controls priced at US$1.28-4.49 per piece FOB Hong Kong. Universal and item-specific models are available.

Twenty million on/off switches rolling off the company's assembly line each month sell for US$0.13-0.38 per piece and are designed for a wide range of home appliances and electronic products.

The company's bi-metal thermostats, used to control temperatures in irons, coffee makers, heaters and ovens, are priced at US$0.38-0.51. Three models are available, with 700,000 pieces manufactured monthly.

Potentiometers, to control volume in audio products, sell for US$0.13-1.30 per piece. The company offers more than 100 models, producing 300,000 pieces per month.

Minimum order is 5,000 pieces, with goods shipped 30 days after order confirmation. The company exports worldwide under its KIE brand name.
