Vinnic-brand nickel metal hydride rechargeable (top) and 9V alkaline (bottom left) batteries from Chung Pak Battery Works Ltd all feature distinctive casing.

KNOWING batteries are the life-blood of countless consumer products, Hong Kong manufacturers constantly develop and produce new options to power electronic gadgets.

Established in 1980, Chung Pak Battery Works Ltd offers a wide range from primary batteries to rechargeable models like its lithium polymer series.

"Introduced early this year, the lithium polymer series has strong rechargeable batteries," says senior marketing executive Susanna Adhikari.

As an extremely light metal, lithium has potential for the highest energy density per weight. Batteries can be tailor-made in different sizes and are ideal for cell phones, says Adhikari.

Another rechargeable series is the nickel metal hydride type, suiting consumer products as varied as remote-control toy cars and digital camcorders.

"Both series are environmentally friendly and fully comply with EU standards," says Adhikari.

In Chung Pak's primary range, the most common item is an alkaline manganese button cell (model L1154), unit priced at HK$0.18 (US$0.02) FOB Hong Kong. The SUM series of extra heavy-duty batteries includes the best-selling SUM3, a zinc chloride AA model at HK$0.52 (US$0.07).

Two thousand workers at Chung Pak's two factories on the Chinese mainland produce 1.8 billion batteries per year. Some carry its Vinnic brand while others are for OEM and private-label orders.

Minimum order value is US$3,000 per shipment, but domestic orders are negotiable. Delivery can be within two days, depending on location. Main markets are Hong Kong, Taiwan and the US.

Twenty-one-year-old Chromex Industrial Co Ltd specializes in button cells and other batteries. The most popular are button-cell models AG1 (US$0.115), AG3 (US$0.115) and AG13 (US$0.225). All prices are FOB Hong Kong and based on 10 button cells per blister packet. Discounts of 3-5% may apply, depending on volume, says sales manager Andrew Suen.

"Quality always comes first at Chromex, and we emphasize customer service. We give customers the most flexibility by setting no minimum-order size," says Suen.

Chromex's mainland factory in Guangdong Province produces about 20 million button cells and other batteries per month. Main markets are the Chinese mainland, the Middle East and South America. Depending on stock, shipment may be within 1-3 weeks of order confirmation.

Most products carry the Chromex brand and fall within two main series: the Gold Cap or White Cap. The price difference is 10-25%, depending on type and packaging.

By mid 2003, Chromex will open a new factory in Chongqing on the Chinese mainland. "With demand rising, the new production plant will serve the domestic market, notably a growing number of electronics manufacturers near Chongqing and even in the western region," Suen says.

Hi-Watt Battery Industry Co Ltd has 88 production lines at its Hong Kong location and three sites in Dongguan and Guangzhou on the Chinese mainland. "The ISO 9000-certified Dongguan factory has our highest capacity," says sales manager Emily Chan.

Executives at this 16-year-old OEM supplier to various famous brands stress consistent quality and quick responses. "We also strive to offer quality batteries that are mercury and cadmium free," says Chan. In addition to OEM work, about 20% of the output carries the Hi-Watt brand.

Popular items include a carbon zinc AA dry battery (model ER6MX, US$0.14), an alkaline AA dry battery (LR6X, US$0.32) and an alkaline D-size dry battery (LR20X, US$0.96). All prices are FOB Hong Kong and calculated per two pieces.

Minimum order value is US$5,000 for shipment about 30 days after order confirmation. Major markets are in Asia, Europe and the US.

Ruifeng Int'l Battery Co Ltd is best known for its alkaline super-heavy-duty batteries. The 1.5V, AAA and AA sizes are all important.

"We have been in the business since 1988 and are a leading alkaline-battery maker for the mainland consumer market," says general manager Henry Wong.

Most customers in other leading markets like the EU, Japan and the US are prominent makers of toys and electronic consumer products.

"With a strong in-house R&D centre, we continue to supply high-quality batteries. Our new products include a battery equipped with a super-ring to help avoid short circuits due to external factors," Wong says.

Ruifeng's batteries come from a 1,300-worker factory in Fuzhou on the Chinese mainland. Annual capacity is one billion pieces. Minimum order value is US$1,000 for shipment 30 days after confirmation.
