Preschool Toys

Safe, plastic "busy-toys" from Maple Toys Int'l Ltd are reliable products that meet the needs of curious kids and frazzled parents.

MODERN children not only need to read and write - they also must be literate in electronics. A bustling market exists for preschool electronic toys, many of which can teach and entertain at the same time.

Asindo China Network Ltd is a 10-year-old manufacturer and designer of preschool and educational toys. The company uses Chinese mainland-sourced plastics and Taiwanese electronic components at its 2,600-worker production facilities in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland and at its Hong Kong offices. It has ISO 9001 and 9002 certifications for both products and office processes.

Design is vital in the highly competitive toy industry, so the company invests widely in that area. "We offer a substantial variety of exclusive patented designs as well as open designs. We have a dedicated design department staffed with European and Canadian designers who can create or develop ideas for special enquiries," says manager Dominique Wong.

The Turtle Telephone plays melodies and lights up as the animal's head nods. "It costs US$4.40 FOB Hong Kong, the same price as our Activity Keyboard, which features a spinning wheel, counting beads, mirrors and a telephone, and hangs nicely in a child's bed," says Wong.

"The Frog Driver, with a flashing light, accelerator, siren sound, brake and radio, costs US$6.90," says Wong. All items run on AA batteries, which are included.

Minimum order is 5,000 pieces, with shipment 60 days after order confirmation. The main markets are France, Italy and Spain.

Boxer Toys Co Ltd, founded in 1991, makes walkie-talkies, musical items and educational toys. A minimum order is 3,000 units per item, for shipment 30 days after order confirmation.

Products bearing the Boxer brand appear in the US, the UK, the Middle East, Italy and Japan. The company sources plastics and electronic components from the Chinese mainland, where it has two factories and 500 workers.

The Animal Sound Cube is an Oppenheim Gold Award-winning product. "Boxer is an ideas-based company that is perhaps 40% OEM-oriented and 60% own products," says sales manager Tanny Lai.

"The Sound Cubes come in sets of two, with half a picture on one side of each cube. When the correct picture portions are lined up and pressed together, the cubes make a relevant sound, such as a dog barking. A guideline price is about US$3 per set, FOB Hong Kong.

"We use the Spanish and English languages for this product, but a larger order would secure production in any language," Lai adds.

Daiful Industrial Ltd makes the amazing walking, talking Quiz Cow, a nine-inch infrared toy that answers 40 questions and has seven play modes. This unique bovine costs about US$4.50 FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order is 1,200 pieces for shipment within 35-60 days.

This company sells mainly to the US and Europe. It has Hong Kong offices and a factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland.

"We manufacture electronic toys, especially remote-controlled items. At our factory, we employ 800-1,000 workers depending on the season. Materials come from around the region. Generally, we import ICs and ABS from Japan and Taiwan," says marketing manager Tony Lam.

Easy Play Toys Ltd was founded in 1996, and now 580 workers employed at its factory near Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland make infants' playthings, preschool toys, games, educational items and electric toys. The main raw materials are Japanese ABS and Taiwanese IC chips. Shipment is within 30 days to main markets in the US and Europe. Minimum order is 100 cartons.

Sales manager Dior Choi describes some of the newest products: "The City Loco has four buttons to control four different sounds. The Kiddie TV has a roller screen to change the picture and three buttons that play three melodies, while the Musical Box has two lights and three buttons to play three melodies."

All Easy Play Toys conform to European and American safety standards for children aged six months or more.
