Buzzing With Success
Buzzers & Transducers

MANY sound-generating devices, including telephones, computers, cars and toys, need buzzers, transducers or similar components. Hong Kong has gained a solid reputation for producing such electronic parts and remains a leading supplier.

Al Goodwell Industries Ltd manufactures some 11m buzzers and 4.2m transducers per month with FOB Hong Kong prices at US$0.05-0.90.

These are used for telephone ringers, alarm functions in clocks, pagers and telecoms products, security devices, toys, microwave ovens and even anti-mosquito appliances that emit sounds undetectable to human ears, says director Landy Lau.

The company offers SMD, magnetic or piezo transducers, piezo buzzers and ceramic buzzer plates. Under the Al brand name, it makes buzzers and transducers using PVC, buzzer plates and integrated circuits sourced from Japan, Taiwan and the Chinese mainland.

"We develop our own products. Occasionally, we engage in OEM too," Lau says.

The minimum order is 10,000 pieces, with delivery taking 15-30 days. Major markets include Italy, Germany, the US, Israel, Turkey, Brazil, Spain and the UK.

Founded in 1986, Al Goodwell operates an ISO 9000-certified factory in Zhejiang on the Chinese mainland. The 15,000-square-metre facility employs 8,000 workers.

Asian Best Industrial Ltd makes about 2m buzzers and transducers each month. Branded ABI, these include piezo-ceramic buzzers and transducers, RMB-series mechanical buzzers and electromagnetic transducers.

"Our items are used in all sound-emitting products, such as pagers, mobile phones, Christmas cards, alarms, cars and computers," says sales supervisor Samson Cheng. The raw materials include brass and magnet, mostly from the Chinese mainland.

"We have existing lines. Customers can also provide specifications," Cheng adds. The minimum order is 10,000 units. Lead time is usually three weeks.

The four-year-old company has almost 300 workers producing at its 2,000-square-metre factory in the southern city of Guangzhou on the Chinese mainland.

"We have materials control and testing. We follow ISO 9000 procedures, even though we have not applied for certification," Cheng says.

Buzzers and transducers from Hong Da Industrial Co come with or without feedback. "Our products are mostly for use in telephones, alarm clocks and security alarms," says marketing executive Gary Tung.

"Our quality stands out. We pay strict attention to raw materials, and all our workers and technicians maintain high quality," he claims. "We develop our own products, but we can also make to customers specifications."

The raw materials include copper, plastics and iron from the Chinese mainland. A minimum order is 100,000 units per item, with a two-week lead time. Major markets include the US, Europe and Hong Kong.

On the Chinese mainland, seven-year-old Hong Da operates three factories totaling more than 500 workers. One factory is ISO 9000-accredited, Tung says.

Each month, Echo Electronics Co makes about 700,000 buzzers and transducers priced at US$0.10-4.50 each FOB Hong Kong. Among these is a series of 12VDC piezo buzzers, including mini and waterproof versions.

"Our products are small at 10-45mm in diameter," says managing director Raymond Cheng. "They are for making sound signals, such as in telephones, pagers, microwave ovens, washing machines, security systems and car-parking aids. We have our basic product lines. If customers have specific requirements, we also try to satisfy them."

Nine-year-old Echo uses electronic materials, metals and plastics from Japan, the US, Europe and the Chinese mainland. The company produces at its 4,000-square-metre, 300-worker factory in the southern boomtown of Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. Its minimum order is 2,000 pieces, with delivery taking 3-5 weeks.

"We obtained ISO 9002 certification in 1997 and ISO 9001 in July 2000," Cheng says.

Kayer Industrial Co Ltd makes 300,000-500,000 buzzers and 500,000 transducers per month. These include SMD transducers, mini-pager transducers, low-frequency buzzers, two-tone buzzers, panel-mount buzzers and piezo horns.

"Basically, our products can be used for anything that gives out sound, such as computers and telephones or even air conditioners. We use good materials, and therefore our quality is good," says marketing manager Connie Yu.

The decade-old company uses plastic materials, magnets, printed circuit boards, piezo elements, transistors, coils and integrated circuits from the US, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Production takes place in a 30,000-square-foot, 200-worker factory in Guangzhou.

Using the KIB brand, the company offers its own models and takes OEM orders too. A minimum order is 5,000-10,000 pieces, depending on the model, with delivery 3-4 weeks later.

Capacitors

CONSCIOUS of specific customer needs, Hong Kong-based makers of electronic components supply a full range of capacitors for inclusion in numerous consumer and industrial goods.

For example, KJ (HK) Electronics Co Ltd is a specialized manufacturer of V-chip, aluminium, electrolytic capacitors for use in CD and MD players.

"Our products are used in LCD monitors, modems, notebook computers and scanners too," says vice-general manager Qiao Xuesong.

KJ produces nine different capacitor series, including wide-temperature, non-polarized, low-impedance, long-life, high-reliability and standard variations. The raw materials come from Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and the Chinese mainland.

The standard series functions at operating temperatures of -40 to +85oC, working voltages of 4-100V and capacitance tolerance of +/- 20%. Depending on size (which varies from 4x5.4mm to 10x10.5mm), these capacitors cost from HK$300 (US$38.46) per 48,000 pieces to HK$1,450 (US$185.90) per 8,000 pieces. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.

KJ employs 40 staff and works from a 2,000-square-metre unit in Hong Kong. It received ISO 9002 certification in March.

The company produces 10 million capacitors per month, with delivery two months after order confirmation. Most customers are from Japan, Singapore and Germany. "They know they can receive good-quality capacitors from us at fair prices," Qiao says.

Global Supplies HK Ltd produces multi-layer, ceramic capacitors for electronic toys and calculators. It also makes SMT capacitors for telecoms products.

Using ceramic powder from Japan and Taiwan, the company makes about 300 million capacitors monthly at its 30,000-square-foot factory in Guangdong province on the Chinese mainland. It has ISO 9001, and the US quality-assurance system, IECQ, accreditation.

Marketing manager Trisee Cheung says Global Supplies deals mainly with Hong Kong customers. "We also sell to companies in Germany and the US while expanding to Asian markets," he adds.

The company produces to various working voltages and capacitance. Its price range of HK$0.04-0.20 (up to US$0.026) FOB Hong Kong reflects this. The minimum order is 50,000-100,000 pieces, depending on specifics. Delivery takes 30-60 days.

Cheung says the key selling point is high quality. "We also provide prompt delivery and very reasonable prices."

For more than 16 years Xebor Co has made film capacitors used for coping, filter and noise suppression in power-supply products. Most of its capacitors go into electrical appliances and computers. It uses plastic film from South Korea and Germany, making about 40 million items per month.

Production is at Xebor's 3,000-square-metre, 320-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. The factory has been ISO 9002-certified for three years. Prices range from HK$0.30 to HK$5 (US$0.04-0.64) per item FOB Hong Kong. There's no minimum order, and delivery takes 2-3 weeks.

Xebor sales manager Jason Lai says the company serves customers in the US, the UK, Germany and the Chinese mainland.

Along with good service and high-quality products, Xebor offers speedy delivery. "Our lead time is fast. We can also get samples to customers in about 10 days," Lai adds.

Kenlott Electronics Co Ltd makes an array of chip capacitors for computers and electronic toys. Prices range from US$5-6 per 1,000 pieces FOB Hong Kong.

Active since 1986, Kenlott also makes coils, inductors and chip resistors at its 820-worker, 120,000-square-foot factory in Guangzhou on the Chinese mainland. It uses ceramic powder and nickel terminals from Japan and Taiwan.

Kenlott has received VDE, a European quality standard, and is applying for ISO 9002.

Marketing manager Stephen Lam believes quality is vital. "Our prices are competitive given our standards. We also emphasize after-sales service," he says.

Kenlott has no minimum order. Providing materials are in stock, delivery follows confirmation by four weeks. The main markets are Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.

Sider Electronic Industries Ltd is the sole sales agent for Unicon-brand electrolytic capacitors in Hong Kong, Macau and the Chinese mainland. It operates through a Hong Kong office with mainland branches in Shenzhen and Dongguan. This ISO 9002-certified company also has started selling to various other Asian customers.

Marketing executive May Kwong says: "Our aim is to provide top-quality products and the best customer services. Competitive prices, punctual shipments and careful follow-up with customers are all part of the deal."

Switches

WHAT electronic gadget or appliance functions without switches? Ubiquitous, yet unsung, the humble switch fills our world in profusion. Hong Kong manufacturers are a major source of switches and other vital electronic components for customers in all major markets.

Launched in 1986, Hong Kong Aleph Co Ltd produces reed switches and relays, photo sensors and security products. Deliveries take 30-60 days, with the products sold mainly to buyers from the US, Japan, the Chinese mainland and Europe. The leading source of manufacturing materials is Japan. The company has achieved ISO 9001 and ISO 14000 quality and process certification.

Sales manager Gan Kui Wen says, "Our products sell to anyone doing electrical assembly. They go into fax machines, cars, photocopiers and toys in fact, into any automatic machinery or anything electronic.

"Our quality is high, mostly because we conduct so many tests on finished products to ensure consistent production standards. We maintain a staff of 50 engineers on the Chinese mainland, where our workforce totals 1,400 people. In Hong Kong, we have 50 liaison staff in sales, marketing, shipping and administration."

Luen Fung Silicone Rubber Mfg Co produces a sophisticated range of membrane-protected keyboards and switches. The three-year-old enterprise also makes rubber keypads. The minimum order is 100 pieces, with delivery possible within two weeks. Selling mainly to the US, Japan and Europe, Luen Fung sources raw materials in the UK, Japan, Taiwan and the US. Three hundred workers are employed at its Chinese mainland factory, which has achieved ISO 9002 quality-standards certification.

Sales manager Leo Lam says the customers manufacture or assemble all types of consumer and electronic items. The range is enormous, from cars and TVs to PCBs, he adds.

The company's products pictured here cost US$0.50-2.50 FOB Hong Kong. These prices are keen, but product quality and looking after customers are equally important. This thinking suits us and our customers so well that we hope to soon double the size of our production unit.

Sonlex Ltd makes an array of items, including: a 4-gang, 1-way switch; a 2-gang, 8-pin network socket outlet; a 13A socket outlet; a 2-gang, 2-way wide switch; and a 16A time-delay cord switch.

Established in 1996, the company makes switches, socket outlets, ventilation fans and energy-saving lamps. The minimum order is one 20ft-container, with deliveries requiring 30-45 days. Sometimes branded Sonlex, the products are sold in Asia, the US and Europe. PVC, PC and ABS are sourced from the US, Taiwan and Japan.

Sonlex Ltd employs 800 workers at its ISO 9001-certified, Chinese-mainland factory. Its average annual turnover is HK$90m (US$11.5m).

Our primary market is Hong Kong, where we are a stable supplier of components for electrical-appliance assembly. However, we do have other markets and reach some end-users, for example, by way of interior decorators, such as in the case of domestic, wall-mounted light switches, says senior product executive Ken Tao.

At the moment, we are extending our product family to offer more choice. We will considerably enhance the range.

Producing a technical product, Sonlex likes to concentrate on quality, a policy obviously correct because sales grow each year.

Nine New Electronics Co, founded in 1998, produces various switches, including leaf, detector, rocker, push, power, micro, hook, locking and tact variations, plus jacks, connectors and earphones. Delivery takes 1-2 weeks, and the main markets are Japan, India, Turkey, the UK and Germany. The company, which employs more than 100 workers on the Chinese mainland, uses ABS, PBT, nylon and copper.

We keep a range of standard designs suited for most tasks. Occasionally, customers ask us to change the colour of a switch, or something minor. For larger technical tasks, we rely on our 30-strong engineering unit on the Chinese mainland, says manager Roy Cheng.

We aim to further increase our product range and hire more production staff, Cheng adds.
