Today's increasingly fast-paced office environment demands high performance equipment that allows companies to improve their customer service, productivity and administration.
From the ubiquitous calculator to sophisticated smart card readers, Hong Kong companies are utilising cutting-edge technology and innovative design to meet and surpass these testing requirements.
Heng Yu Technology (HK) Ltd is one company that has developed an intimate understanding of the needs of the modern office in more than 10 years as an OEM/ODM producer. "We specialise in the design and production of data input and information security equipment," explains vice-president Alex Chan.
The ISO 9001-certified company's products include keyboards, pin pads, POS keyboards/terminals and magstripe/smart card terminals. "Our keyboards and card readers are widely used in the banking, financial, security and point-of-sales industries," Chan adds.
Keyboards and card readers feature wear-resistant keys, special circuitry for eliminating power surges and software for easy integration within multiple applications.
"As data security becomes increasingly important we have developed biometric recognition devices, such as fingerprint identification units, to provide our customers with increased protection," says Chan. "We also offer tooling production and prototype-making services."
Design and manufacturing takes place at a 16,800-square-metre purpose-built production facility and technology campus employing 200 staff in Zhuhai on the Chinese mainland.
Raw materials are sourced from the US, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan, and finished products are exported to the US, Germany, Singapore and Japan after rigorous testing.
Prices for keyboards and smart card readers range from US$10-200 per piece FOB Hong Kong, depending on features and functions. Minimum order requirement varies according to quantity and style, with delivery 3-4 weeks following order confirmation.
Big Apple Ltd also embraces advanced technology and is currently producing some of the slimmest laser cards available on the market, according to executive Ivy Wong. "Our 88x22x4mm slim laser card is particularly popular with customers due to its high quality and compact size," she claims.
Founded in 1988, Big Apple also manufactures three-in-one laser pointers with a PDA stylus. "The innovative combination of ballpoint pen, PDA stylus, and laser pointer allows users to jot down a quick note, input information into their PDA or point to information on a display," explains Wong.
The company produces about 10,000 pieces of each item per month using materials sourced on the Chinese mainland. "Our main export market is Germany but we are also focusing on increasing our sales in France, Spain and the Netherlands," Wong notes.
Production takes place in a joint venture mainland factory in Shenzhen employing 500 workers. Minimum order for the laser pointer and slim laser card is 3,000 pieces per item, delivered 40-50 days after order confirmation. The three-in-one laser pointer with PDA stylus costs US$4 FOB Hong Kong per unit, while the slim laser cards sell for US$2.50 each.
Telephones, cordless phones and sophisticated answering machines aimed at high-end business users are the specialty of A-Team Technology Ltd, which was established in 1999 and recorded turnover of US$18m in 2002.
General manager Edmond Leung says key clients include British Telecom, France Telecom, KPN, Cable & Wireless, Alto and Ministry of Sound. "We own our designs and develop products mainly for the European market," he adds.
Telephone units feature large directory records plus PABX message waiting signals and calendar/time displays. "We continually look for ways to develop added-value, easy-to-use functions that are tailored to business use," Leung says.
For example, the flagship AF5010 high-end business phone is simple to operate, user-friendly, and displays messages and help information in plain language.
Production takes place at an 864-square-metre factory employing 800 workers in Bao'an, Shenzhen, which produces 150,000-200,000 units a month. A-Team requires a minimum order of 3,000 units delivered between 10 weeks and three months after order confirmation.
A-Team's products are exported to the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, the US, Austria and Switzerland at unit prices subject to country and market requirements.
Meanwhile, Catiga Electronics Co Ltd has been marketing a broad spectrum of multifunction digital desktop calculators under its own brand name since 1985.
The company also welcomes OEM orders, adds marketing assistant Benny Wong. "We always develop our products with the idea of maintaining their uniqueness when compared to those of our competitors," says Wong.
Emphasis is placed on research and the development of new items that reflect changing market needs and meet client requests. Animated CAD software is used for design purposes, while CAD programs aid mechanical engineering.
The company enjoys ISO 9002 certification and sources its materials from Japan, Taiwan, Korea and the mainland for production by 600 employees at a facility in Guangdong Province.
Desktop calculators range in price from US$2.33-3.70 FOB Hong Kong, depending on the style and function, and are delivered 35-40 days after order confirmation. "Our calculators are marketed worldwide, but we are currently focusing on increasing our market share in Indonesia and India," adds Wong.
It's little wonder that this type of innovation, quality and commitment keeps canny buyers all over the world busy calculating the exciting profits to be made from Hong Kong office products.
