|Hing Lung Motor Mfy's DC motors, gear motors and generators are sold in Europe, the US, Japan, Malaysia and Korea|
Hoi Po Motor Fty Ltd, for example, specialises in DC micromotors ranging in size from 6-32mm. "We focus on custom-made motors, and work closely with customers from the development stage," says marketing manager Joanna Chan.
She says there are "numerous" applications for the company's motors, many of which carry the Hoi Po brand, including small home appliances, AV and health products and office equipment.
"Most of our motors are shipped to manufacturers on the Chinese mainland, but are eventually destined for customers in the US and Europe," Chan explains.
Hoi Po produces around 300,000 pieces a day at its 4,200-square-metre, ISO 9000-certified factory in Huizhou on the mainland, using metals sourced from Japan and the US.
"We require a minimum order of 10,000 pieces, and delivery is 3-8 weeks after order confirmation depending on the season - July to September is the busiest time," Chan adds, noting that FOB Hong Kong unit prices range from US$0.15-8.00.
Teco Electric Co Ltd is another company that emphasises the importance of tailor-made motors. "We are very flexible regarding customers' design and development needs," says sales manager Ben Ko.
"We specialise in coreless motors for use in automatic machines such as robotic arms, but also produce brushless motors and general AC/DC motors."
Most of Teco's customers are in Western Europe, but the company is keen to develop a wider base for its TE Motor brand in Europe as well as in the US. "The company was founded in 2000, but our president has more than 40 years' experience in motor design and manufacturing," he notes.
Teco operates three mainland production facilities in Shenzhen, Tianjin and Shunde, two of which have ISO 9001 certification while the third is applying, that together can produce one million motors a month.
"The materials we use all come from Japan to ensure quality," Ko claims, adding that Teco's flexibility extends to minimum orders. "We can go as low as 1,000 pieces for high-value gear motors and usually deliver two weeks after order confirmation, though we can fulfil urgent orders in seven days."
Miniature DC motors are the speciality of Suntech Development Co Ltd, together with ever-magnetic AC generators. "Our motors can be widely applied in small household appliances, healthcare products, automobiles, electronic products and toys," explains manager Chi Shun Lau.
"Our key advantages are good quality, on-time delivery and R&D teams that develop OEM and ODM projects based on customers' own requirements."
Suntech operates 200,000-square-foot mainland production facilities in Shantou and Shenzhen, which are ISO 9001-certified. "All the precision materials are sourced from Japan or Taiwan," says Lau.
The 18-year-old company produces three million motors a month, which are available in minimum order quantities of 5,000 units delivered two weeks after order confirmation.
Suntech, which has its own Suntech brand, specialises in motors in the US$1-2 FOB Hong Kong unit price range. "Taiwan and Europe are our major markets, and we are seeking to increase sales in South America," Lau adds.
Standard Motor Co Ltd emphasises three major selling points, according to assistant general manager Jonathan Yim. "First, our materials are all top-class so quality is consistent; second, our competitive prices; and, third, customer feedback," he claims. "We understand what our customers need and adapt motors to suit their particular applications."
Standard's expertise lies in the production of DC micromotors of less than 15mm diameter. "They are suitable for home appliances, personal care items such as electric toothbrushes and shavers, CD players, and in the automotive industry for applications such as electric mirrors and door locks," Yim explains. "We also produce a small range of high-powered motors for power tools."
Standard's end customers are in Europe, the US and Japan, so the 10-year-old company mainly delivers to OEM factories on the mainland and in Thailand. "We also have some direct exports to Japan and the US for companies that still manufacture there," Yim adds.
The bulk of Standard's materials are sourced from Japanese companies. "However, many of these firms have shifted their production facilities to the mainland, so we are supplied directly by them with items like copper materials, motor casing, rotors, bearings, carbon brushes and resistors," Yim reveals. "Some parts also come from mainland companies and Taiwan."
Standard's ISO 9001-, QS9000- and TS16949-certified factory has a total floor space of 32,000 square metres and a production capacity of 23 million pieces per month. "Our minimum orders are flexible - we can ship small batches of large variety if customers require," Yim advises.
Delivery is 2-3 weeks after order confirmation at FOB Hong Kong unit prices that are available on request. "Standard was honoured in the 2004 Hong Kong Awards for Industry, Productivity category," Yim adds.
Given this level of commitment to innovation and excellence, it's little wonder that the driving force behind many of the world's tiny but important components are Hong Kong electronic component and parts manufacturers.
