Practical and essential, yet individual, functional and often fun are apt descriptions of the wide range of lighting items from Hong Kong. Many are also highly innovative and stylish, creating even brighter business opportunities with clients worldwide.
An example of a company with dazzling products is Fondgear Co Ltd. The range of lighting products from this manufacturer includes spot, desk, floor, garden, pendant, track and wall designs and accessories.
"Our main market is Europe and we have two new lamps especially designed for that market, which favours a simple, elegant design with a touch of glass, in this case in the shade," explains assistant merchandiser Agatha Chan.
"Both lamps have an adjustable control to create different lighting effects and moods, and, at a height of 41cm and 48cm respectively, they are ideal for placing on a coffee or side table," she adds.
Fondgear has an in-house R&D team and its designers come up with 8-10 new items each month. "The team travels to Europe and the US four times a year to locate new ideas and gain inspiration, because we want to ensure our products are always anticipating the next trend," says Chan. "We also want to remain competitive."
Established in 1986, Fondgear has a monthly production capacity of approximately 150,000 items. The minimum order is 200 pieces and delivery is about 35 days after confirmation of order.
Equally prolific is Wide Loyal Industries Ltd, which makes a range of decorative lighting products from rope lights to light strings and flexible lights. The company has a strong reputation in its field with numerous well-known users, including the Sydney Olympics to name but one.
"Our products are highly flexible, which allows users to make them up into practically any shapes they want according to different situations and environments," says sales manger Ricky Yuen.
"We have our own Flexilight brand," he says, "which represents an improved design in terms of flexibility, brightness and durability from other rope light products. Flexilight products are very successful and are widely accepted."
Wide Loyal, established in 1990, introduces 20-30 new items each year to keep up with changing consumer tastes and technology advancements. Production takes place at the firm's ISO 9001-certified, 12,000-square-metre factory that has a monthly capacity to produce eight million metres of lights. The minimum order value requirement is US$4,500, and major markets are Europe and the US.
Concentrating on a niche market has proved important to the success story of New Night Lighting Mfg Ltd, which introduces several new models every six months. This company specialises in the manufacture of small lighting products, particularly night-lights.
"We have more than 40 years' experience in the production of quality night-lights," says the 1963-established firm's assistant general manger Vinnie Wu.
Three top-selling night-lights, particularly in Europe, are a children's design (model NNL-20P, which is 6.9x4.2x6cm), an automatic LED night-light (model LED-1A that measures 11x9x5.7cm) and a traditional night-light (model NNL-48, which is 12.5x10x9cm).
The unit prices of these models are US$0.74, US$1.54 and US$1.41, respectively, FOB Hong Kong. "One of the coming trends for 2007 is the increase in popularity of LED lighting products," comments Wu, adding that the company has its own Winsun brand.
"In addition to night-lights, we also manufacture candle lights, sensor lights and lighting accessories," Wu says. "Major markets are Germany, Italy, France, Sweden, the UK, Japan, Singapore and the Middle East."
With a monthly production capacity of 600,000 night-lights (200,000 other items) at its 10,000-square-metre factory on the mainland, the firm delivers minimum orders of 3,000 assorted items about 30 days after order confirmation.
Meanwhile, 1990-established Wai Lung Lighting Mfg Ltd has a wide selection of crystal lamps, chandeliers, wall, table and floor lamps, and ceiling-mounted lamps that appear usually under the B&C brand name.
Three popular models sure to make an impact make use of crystal ornaments sourced from Egypt to create a rainbow of colour as the light passes through the prisms. "These new models combine the classic and the modern to create elegant fittings that suit most decorating styles," says marketing manager Bonny Lau.
Two standing lights (models WL-64607-1CH and WL-64614-3CH) are 32cm and 43cm high respectively, while the chandelier (model WL-61666-8-2CH) is 30cm high and has a diameter of 70cm. All three feature chrome-plated frames.
"We introduce new items every 2-3 months, usually following designs from our in-house R&D team. Some ideas are also provided by customers," Lau says.
Hong Kong, the mainland, North America, Europe and the Middle East are Wai Lung's main markets, and it delivers minimum orders of 100 items 45 days after order confirmation. The monthly production capacity is 10,000 lamps. In addition to complying with many international electrical standards, the company is ISO 9001-certified.
Shining brightly, Hong Kong has the style and the products to brighten up any business day.
