Bright Prospects

Charter Hero Enterprises Ltd's lighting catalogue highlights include a wooden lantern-style lamp with paper shade (left) and a square table lamp with chrome-plated base and a thread shade
From classic to modern and innovative to futuristic, lighting products from Hong Kong are helping to brighten up the world and dazzle the market with a wide spectrum of own designs and OEM brands.

For example, a square, lantern-like wooden table lamp with a handle (model HT28T) figures among the elegant lamps from Charter Hero Enterprises Ltd. "For better effect, the lampshade features handmade floral paper," says director Francis Lau.

Another square table lamp from Charter Hero has a thread lampshade and a chrome-plated iron base (model CT5025).

"The wood, metal, paper, glass and electrical accessories are sourced on the Chinese mainland," says Lau, "and both models are priced at about US$5.50 each FOB Hong Kong."

Set up in 1997, Charter Hero offers mainly wood and metal lamps, producing some 50,000 of them a month at its 4,000-square-metre, 130-worker factory in Jiangmen on the mainland.

The minimum order value is US$5,000, while delivery can be expected 45 days after order confirmation. Charter Hero sells mostly to Japan, which "contributes 50% of our sales". Other exports go to the EU and the US.

Also offering classic styles is Innotech Int'l Ltd, which nevertheless does it with a playful twist and the use of bold colours exemplified by a pink wooden table lamp with floral motifs (model 1M-L031). "The shade is made from cotton, while the base is MDF," says director C.W. Yuen.

Another eye-catching model is a four-light chandelier (model 1M-C023), featuring an MDF frame in bright pink and cotton lampshades in a cheerful yellow. Metal, plastic, wood and cotton for these lamps are sourced from the mainland.

Established in 2002, Innotech operates a 30,000-square-foot, 500-worker factory in Zhongshan on the mainland and produces some 300,000 lighting products every month. Major markets are the US and Europe, and the minimum order requirement is 3,000 lamps. The order lead time is 35-40 days.

Moving to multifunctional lighting products, Chi Bon Industrial Co Ltd has launched a book light complete with a magnifier (model LT182). It features a round CCFL tube, a gooseneck enabling adjustment of the tube's position and a toggle switch.

"There is also a clip for attaching a book," says marketing executive Ruby Hui. "It also has a 2X magnifying glass to enlarge the text when reading, yet the product is small enough to be put into a pocket."

Also included in Chi Bon's catalogue is a mirror light box (model LT 100) that is designed for the travelling or commuting woman. Besides a round CCFL tube, the product sports an ordinary mirror on the outside and a 2X magnifying mirror on the inside.

"The user can see her skin pores in the magnifying mirror," says Hui, "while items of make-up can be put into the box." Both of these models can be powered by AC, DC, USB chargers or car chargers, she adds.

The minimum order is 3,000 units and delivery takes 40-50 days after order confirmation. "Our main markets are the US and Europe," Hui says. Founded in 1978, Chi Bon produces at its 130,000-square-foot, 200-worker factory in Shenzhen on the mainland.

For a futuristic look, Cima Lighting Industrial Ltd supplies a range of LED table lamps with slim silhouettes. "LEDs are energy-saving, and consume only about 12% of the energy required by an ordinary light bulb," says sales manager Pinky Mo.

"The LED also has a long lifespan, averaging 60,000-100,000 hours, while maintenance costs are low compared with filament types," says Mo. "In addition, LEDs do not get hot and are therefore safer. They are suitable for bedside reading or for use by children. Finally, the small size of the LED makes lamp designing more flexible."

FOB Yantian unit prices range from US$6-30 for LED lamps that come complete with 12V adaptors. "We also make LED recessed lights for corridors and other purposes," Mo says. "The LEDs come from the US, Korea and Taiwan, while the lamp bodies are made of zinc alloy from Taiwan or the mainland depending on customers' requirements."

Established in 1992, Cima Lighting specialises in decorative portable lighting items and LED lights, with an average total monthly production volume of about 600,000 units from its mainland factory in Huizhou, which spans 500,000 square feet and employs about 500 workers. "Up to 40% of orders for LED lamps are for OEM projects," says Mo.

The firm's biggest market for LED lights at present is Europe. "We expect sales to France and Italy will grow fast, but Germany and the UK will soon catch up," Mo predicts, adding that a minimum order is one TEU of assorted models with at least 500 units per model. Delivery is 45-60 days after receipt of L/C or deposit.

With delightful designs and superb quality, sales of lighting products from Hong Kong look certain to continue shining bright across world markets.
