See-Plus Industrial Ltd offers more than 1,000 types of jacks and sockets and plans to expand its range after a new plant opens in 2003

It's the little things that often matter the most in life, and electronic components are no exception. Jacks, sockets and other parts, for example, are vital, if unsung, components for electronic products. Hong Kong's thriving component manufacturing sector offers a wide variety of parts to serve the industry's diverse needs.

See-Plus Industrial Ltd, for example, has more than 1,000 switches and jacks in its product line. "The switches are used in small voltage toys and audio equipment, the earphone jacks for audio equipment, and the DC power jacks for DC current used by DVDs," says See-Plus import/export executive Johnny Wong.

Established in 1980, the company mass produces 25 million pieces per month, usually low-end items that it exports to the Chinese mainland, India and Japan and new markets such as Russia. Components are made of a combination of iron or steel, and ABS or nylon. Minimum order is 1,000 pieces per model, with delivery 10-14 days after order confirmation.

Ninety-nine per cent of See-Plus products carry the company's SS brand. "We do OEM and private label for the remaining 1%," Wong adds. The company also maintains a 10-15 person research and development department.

The ISO 9002-certified manufacturer operates a 12,000-square-metre factory with 1,500 workers in Dongguan on the mainland and plans to open a second production facility early this year. "We will be able to offer more varieties of products than we have now," Wong says.

Dongbo Industries Ltd is known for its RCA jacks, multi-jacks, AC sockets, phone jacks, speaker terminals and terminal blocks. The company turns out three million pieces per month from its 5,400-square-metre factory in Tangxia on the mainland. Japan, the US and Europe are its main markets.

"We concentrate on high-end products and make more than 300 kinds of connectors for audiovisual equipment used in automobiles, or with TVs and DVDs," says Dongbo managing director K. H. Lee. Copper strips and ABS are the two main materials employed in its components.

Jacks represent 40% of production; speaker terminals and antennas 30%; and sockets and terminal blocks the remaining 30%. Prices range from US$0.04-0.80 per piece FOB Hong Kong for jacks; sockets sell for US$0.10 to over US$1 per piece. Minimum order is 2,000 pieces per model, with delivery 30-45 days after order confirmation.

Dongbo, which earned ISO 9001 certification in 2002, designs all its products in its own research and development department. "We develop custom-made components for each company," Lee says.

The Diamond Electronics (Hong Kong) Co Ltd product range encompasses pin jacks, RF connectors, scart connectors (similar to pin jacks but used in Europe), phone jacks and speaker terminals. Pin jacks are the largest category, accounting for 35% of production. "We have one-pin, two-pin, three-pin, four-pin and six-pin jacks," says Elaine Cheng, a representative of the 10-year-old firm.

RF connectors, the high-frequency connectors used for set-top TV boxes, represent 25% of the company's annual output of 180 million pieces. Speaker terminals total about 15% of production, scart connectors 10% and phone jacks 5%, with the remaining 10% consisting of miscellaneous components and parts.

Products are manufactured from ABS or PC and metals such as brass or zinc at Diamond Electronics' 340,000-square-foot, ISO 9001-certified factory in Jieyang on the mainland. "Sales were up 20% in 2002," Cheng notes. "We expect business to be even better in 2003 so we will expand our factory capacity by 50%."

OEM orders account for about 70% of the company's business, with ODM taking up the remainder. Most exports are shipped to Japanese factories on the mainland, Malaysia and Indonesia. Minimum order is 5,000 pieces. Deliveries are made 15 days after order confirmation.

D & S Mfg Ltd specialises in AC/DC converters, mainly 12 volt to 24 volt, and cigarette sockets. Its product line consists of 5-7 types of sockets, priced from US$0.20-1.00 per piece, and four converter models available from US$6-9 per piece FOB Hong Kong.

The converters are typically used by motorists who want to plug home appliances, such as coffee warmers, into an electricity source in their car. D & S's products conform to various countries' standards.

The company manufactures 500,000 converters and plugs per month at its 10,000-square-foot factory in Dongguan. "We plan to expand our factory by 20-40% early this year," says Samuel Fu, marketing manager at the nine-year-old firm. "Business has been good, especially for OEM orders, and we expect this to continue."

Europe and the US account for the bulk of its export business but Fu adds that the company is looking to develop markets in Asia, such as Vietnam and Malaysia. "The demand for our products there should be high because of the growing number of cars," he believes.

D & S has a minimum order requirement of 1,000 pieces per model and delivers 2-3 weeks after order confirmation.
