Intech LCD Group Ltd manufactures tri-colour LCDs ranging from six-inch units for health-measurement systems to 3/4-inch units for electronic watches.

EVERYWHERE consumers look, they see LCDs (liquid crystal displays) at work - in devices they own, in shops and on display during travel by car or public transport. Modern manufacturers design and custom-build LCDs for applications ranging all the way from mobile phones, electronic games, calculators, audio equipment, clocks and microwave ovens to building security systems.

Intech LCD Group Ltd, which began in 1987, employs more than 1,100 workers at factories in Shenzhen, Xiamen and Dalian on the Chinese mainland. This company designs and produces LCDs and modules of four main types (character, graphic, TCP and COF) for sale to customers in the US, Canada, Brazil, Germany, Italy, France, South Korea and Israel.

Most Intech products are custom-designed for well-known clients like Nortel, LG and Alcatel. "We manufacture tri-colour LCDs ranging from six-inch units used in health-measurement systems to three-quarter-inch units for small items like electronic watches," says marketing manager Henry Fok.

The company's latest creations include: a 128x128 dots graphic module (model ITM-128128A) priced at US$24.50 FOB Hong Kong; 128x64 dots graphic module (ITM-12864K2), US$9.80; 240x128 dots graphic module (ITM-240128A), US$29; 40-character by four-line module (ITM-4004C), US$14.90; 15-character by two-line module, TAB (ITM-1502K), US$5; 20-pin panel (EDS816T), US$2.50; and a module, COF, custom-built, price on application.

Intech sources most of its raw materials, mainly ITO glass, liquid crystal, polarizers, PCBs and ICs, from Japan, the UK and the Chinese mainland.

"We make 100-200 different product types per month, giving us monthly production capacity of about 10,000 units. Minimum order is 100 units, which can be shipped 4-6 weeks after order confirmation," says Fok.

"We recently helped Alcatel program software and build LCDs for a mail-categorizing system for a major European post office. We have also launched a 640x480 dot, high-resolution VGA display," Fok confides.

With 500 workers at a factory in Shanghai, Fusan Ltd designs and custom-produces LCDs and modules for Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.

Eight-year-old Fusan makes full-colour LCDs and modules used in consumer/domestic appliances like toys, watches, VCD or MP3 players and washing machines.

"Everything we make is custom-built, and prices vary depending on materials, customer specifications and order quantity. We offer personalized services, and customers are happy to work with us," says sales manager Rony Lo.

The company produces about one million units monthly. Usual minimum order is 1,000 pieces for shipment within 40 days of order confirmation.

"We use only quality raw materials. Our ITO glass, polarizers and ICs all come from Japan, and our PCBs are custom-built on the Chinese mainland," Lo says.

Fusan makes LCDs ranging from 10x15mm to 300x100mm for customers like Applied Electronics Ltd, Kasugu Ltd and Futaba Ltd. One big-selling category is touch-panel-type LCDs for PDAs.

Casil Semiconductor Ltd, a company with a 22-year history, offers TN/HTN/STN LCD panels and modules from its 800-worker factory in Huizhou on the Chinese mainland.

"Half our LCD modules are standard lines, with the other 50% custom-designed," says senior sales executive Chase Cheung.

"Our major customers, including Sanyo, Honeywell, Micro Electronics and Compasseco, are based in the US, the UK, Germany and Japan. We can ship within 4-6 weeks of order confirmation. Minimum order is 5,000 units for LCDs and 2,000 units for LCD modules," says Cheung.

"One of our most interesting projects was to design and produce LCD modules for an electronic alarm system to be used in large buildings," he adds.

RCL Display Ltd makes COGs, TABs, extended temperature STN displays and modules, graphics LCD modules and custom-designed or standard LCDs and modules at its 1,500-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland.

"We produce up to 700,000 LCDs and modules per month. There is no minimum order, and exact prices depend on the quantity required," says marketing manager Vijay Trevedi.

This company's main markets are Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, the US and Germany. Products are shipped 4-6 weeks after order confirmation.
