Home entertainment today is a far cry from yesteryear - bulky television sets have been replaced with flat-screen, slim, attractive state-of-the-art masterpieces that provide millions of true-to-life colours.
These virtual home theatres with their sophisticated amplifiers and DVD players are often linked with a 5.1 speaker system comprising woofers, subwoofers, front, back and side speakers to provide total wall-to-wall surround sound that is as good as any cinema.
Given their decades of experience in the electronics industry, it comes as no surprise that Hong Kong companies are taking a starring role in the ongoing development of home theatre equipment and systems.
Take, for example, Keenpoint Industrial Group Ltd, which manufactures Bluetooth 2.1 channel speaker systems, Digital 2.4 GHz wireless speaker systems and Active 5.1 channel home theatre speakers as well as a vast array of MP3 players, USB travel speakers and portable media players.
The 18-year-old company's latest offerings include an Active 5.1 channel home theatre system that will fascinate the most fastidious film fan, thanks to 4-inch subwoofers and 3-inch satellite speakers.
Keenpoint's new system features a remote control with 2.1 or 5.1 channel selector and standby, reset, mute and 3D-effect functions, as well as individual volume controls for each channel.
Compatible with DTS, Dolby and DVD, the KP-5916Q or KP-5616Q is magnetically shielded to ensure that it doesn't interfere with AV equipment.
"With our experience in OEM and ODM projects and strong support from our engineering and R&D teams, we are dedicated to the continuous development of new products at competitive prices," says marketing and sales manager K.C. Cheung.
The company employs 300 workers who produce 20,000 Active 5.1 channel home theatre systems a month at a 4,100-square-metre factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland.
Keenpoint requires minimum orders of one TEU delivered 30-40 days after order confirmation. "Our main markets are the US, the UK and Germany," Cheung adds.
Also strong in home theatre and hi-fi speakers and amplifiers is Pinnacle Industries (HK) Ltd, which evolved two years ago from speaker specialist Dongguan Jie Ting Electronic Co Ltd.
"Constant development over the past decade has seen our products evolve from computer speakers to hi-fi speakers and 5.1 channel home theatre speakers, with the newly-developed piano-finish speaker our leading product," general manager Wang Qian explains. "The moment you hear the sound from our system, you will understand why home speakers and hi-fi speaker systems are so charming."
Pinnacle's latest audio delights include the aluminium column speaker home theatre system (EX510A), wooden cabinets with plastic front panel piano painting (EX605B) and a piano-bake finish (SC700).
Made of piano wood, plastic and iron sourced from the mainland, these CE-approved systems are assembled at a 13,000-square-metre, 500-worker mainland plant in Dongguan.
The factory's monthly production of 50,000 systems, many of which carry Pinnacle's own BNES brand, is sold in Japan, Germany and North America.
"Minimum order is 360 units and delivery is 30 days from confirmation of the order," Wang explains.
But home theatre entertainment is not only confined to surround-sound audio systems - the big screen has also entered the home with a kaleidoscope of choices to suit every room and budget.
East Kit Electronic Mfg Co's general manager Yvonne Lai says her company updates the design of its television products every one or two years, in order to meet rapid changes in market and customer requirements.
"Although LCD TV has become more popular in European countries, the CRT TV market volume remains stable and the technology design will not change much," she believes. "But manufacturers will have to concentrate on changing the overall design of the television to attract customers."
East Kit manufactures 14- to 34-inch standard TVs and 15- to 37-inch LCD sets to OEM/ODM requirements, producing 500,000 units a month at ISO 9001-certified factories in Shanghai and Suzhou that cover some 50,000 square metres and employ 1,000 workers.
The 16-year-old company, which has its own East Kit brand, exports to such major markets as Russia, India, Mexico and Turkey. "The minimum order is 1,000 sets with delivery 30 days from the order confirmation," Lai explains.
TVs are also big sellers for AudioKit Electronics Ltd, which has joined forces with mainland-based Changzhou Haojie Electric Co, which is located near Shanghai.
AudioKit currently produces an array of high-quality AV systems, including TFT LCD TVs, home theatre systems, slot-in portable DVD, CD/VCD/DVD mini components and DVB-Ts.
The ISO 9001-certified company produces 10,000 sets a month, many of which appear under the popular Grundig, Amstrad, Telefunken and Roadstar brand names, company spokeswoman Janet Chan explains.
"We also have CE - both EMC+LVD - CB and SASO approval and can meet all requirements for quality, reliability and price," she claims.
AudioKit requires a minimum order of one FEU delivered 30 days after confirmation of the order. "Our main markets are Italy, France, Spain, the UK, Germany, the UAE and Australia," Chan notes.
Clearly, the expertise provided by Hong Kong manufacturers offers fans prime position when it comes to selecting super-sophisticated home theatre systems that suit any budget.
