First Audio Mfg (HK) Ltd's hi-fi home audio systems are popular in Europe, the US, South Africa, Australia and Asia
The modern home can choose from a multitude of hi-fidelity audio devices that are not only technologically advanced but also competitively priced. Hong Kong-based companies are among the leading producers of the latest in home audio solutions for music buffs worldwide.
Take First Audio Mfg (HK) Ltd, a manufacturer of home audio systems. Since its inception in 1981, the company has established a reputation for quality and innovation, says sales and marketing manager Dalex Chiu.
The company, which obtained ISO 9001 certification in 2000, manufactures its products at an 80,000-square-metre, 1,500-worker factory in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland. The components and other raw materials are sourced from the mainland, Singapore and Japan.
"It is a testimony of our capability to produce hi-fidelity home audio systems that our products are now sold in Europe, the US, South Africa, Australia and Asian countries, including the mainland and Singapore," Chiu says, noting that in 2002 First Audio posted a turnover of more than US$5m.
Looking ahead, he adds: "There was an explosion of demand in the home theatre market with the launch of DVD players. We expect that the next demand explosion will be based on DVD-RW or rewritable players, as major manufacturers of these products transfer technology to smaller producers based on the mainland."
The company's products, sold under the Fidek and ProSound brands, include the FAV-301BA model DD/DTS Audiovisual Receiver; the Reference 2 Home Theatre Speaker System; the FSW108 10-inch Powered Subwoofer; and the FSA7800 Q-Sound 5.1 Home Theatre System.
First Audio quotes prices in response to customers' orders. It requires a minimum order of one FEU, which it ships about 30-40 days after order confirmation.
Yuen Fook Industrial Co Ltd, meanwhile, specialises in karaoke mixers. The company, which was established in 1990, produces about 10 Karaoke Mixer models. Its recent products include the KP-300, with a unit price of US$48, and the KP-200, which costs US$25. Prices are FOB Hong Kong.
Marketing executive Phoebe Lee says Yuen Fook takes "great care" in sourcing the components for its karaoke mixers from reliable sources on the mainland, Hong Kong, Japan and the US. The mixers are made at its mainland factory in Dongguan, which employs about 100 workers.
The company produces 10,000 pieces of karaoke mixers monthly on an OEM basis for markets in France, the US and Japan. Yuen Fook requires a minimum order of 1,000 karaoke mixers, which it delivers within 30-45 days of order confirmation.
Sunfield Engineering Ltd has fashioned an equally faithful clientele in the UK, France, South Africa, Germany, Taiwan and Australia since it was established in 1991, says business manager Eva Wong.
She attributes the company's OEM success to the care it takes in designing products to clients' exacting specifications. "Sometimes clients give ideas, but in other instances we come up with our own models based on market feedback. The designing is subcontracted to specialised design houses," Wong says.
Sunfield's product range includes CD boom boxes, personal CD players, CD micro systems, clock radios with or without CD players and portable radios.
Three of the company's new designs are the CDR-112 PLL Radio CD Micro System with an optional RDS tuning system; CDR-113 PLL Radio CD Micro System; and CDR-228 PLL Radio CD Micro System.
The ICs for Sunfield's products come from Japan while the other components are sourced from the mainland. Manufacturing is done at the company's 500-worker mainland factory in Shenzhen.
Sunfield requires a minimum order of two FEUs for CD micro systems; one FEU for CD boom boxes; 5,000 units for either personal CD players, clock radios or portable radios; and 3,000 units for CD clock radios, according to managing director Danny Lau. Shipment takes about 50-60 days after order confirmation.
Lu Kee Electronic Co Ltd is equally successful, having over two decades become known as a reliable manufacturer of home audio products, says assistant marketing manager Kelvin Choi.
The company's radio cassette recorders, portable CD/MP3 radio boom boxes and micro tower system home audio configurations are sold in Germany, France, the US, the UK, Taiwan and Korea under the Watson, Firstline, GPX, Lotte, Goodmans, Bush, Mos and Audiosonic brands.
Lu Kee, which was awarded ISO 9001 certification in 2001 and is also TUV-certified, has a monthly production of 30,000 radio cassette recorders, 50,000 boom boxes and 30,000 micro tower system units.
They are manufactured at its 6,000-square-metre, 1,500-worker factory in Dongguan from electronic components, plastic and wood sourced both locally and through Hong Kong-based suppliers.
Lu Kee's recent products include the MCD-2900PR Vertical CD Micro Tower System with a unit price of US$38.60 and the MCD-3060 Micro Tower System with subwoofer with a per unit tag of US$45. Prices are FOB Hong Kong for a minimum order of one TEU.
