Maintaining Peak Fitness
Health is of vital importance, and today more people are taking greater interest in their bodies. Helping out are manufacturers in Hong Kong's personal electronics sector.
Sales manager Lawrence Chow says Master Class Int'l (Far East) Ltd, established in 1997, is dedicated to creating and manufacturing healthcare products under its Biocare Plus brand name.
"We employ an innovative R&D team comprising electro-mechanical and computer engineers and, working with market intelligence and feedback from major clients, we regularly create new and reliable products," he says.
Typical of the range is the SBH007 Body Fat and Water scale. "This scale utilises BIA (bioelectrical impedance analysis) technology to measure body water and fat and provide a daily calorie recommendation, in addition to standard weight indication," Chow explains.
The SBH007 consists of a transparent, 8mm tempered glass top supported by a plastic base that also holds the digital readout and four AAA batteries.
Other features include auto power off, individual fat and water graduations of 0.1%, weight graduations of 0.1kg/0.2lbs, and 12 memory positions to keep records.
The SBBC203 Baby Scale is a safe and convenient, concave measuring platform with an illuminated colour display. Made from plastic, it is available in blue, yellow or white, has four memory positions, auto power off and a weighing capacity of 20kgs/44lbs/704 ounces. There are four AAA batteries. "We sell these scales and other health and personal electronics products in Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Sweden and the US," adds Chow.
Another internationally oriented health electronics manufacturer is EKS Asia Ltd. "Following restructuring in 2002, we continued to build our image as a manufacturer of personal and kitchen scales," explains marketing manager Adelina Ling.
She adds that EKS's six factories in France, Sweden and the Chinese mainland provide a total production area of 80,000 square metres. "We have an advanced R&D department, a tooling workshop and highly automated production facilities," Ling adds.
EKS manufactures body fat and water analyser/scales in plastic, glass or stainless steel, dedicated body fat analysers and hand-held body fat/water analysers.
"We also do a whole range of mechanical and electronic kitchen and postal scales," says Ling, adding that buyers can use their own brands or the EKS imprint.
Monthly production of assorted scales reaches 600,000 units, which go to Europe, Canada and Asia, including the Chinese mainland. The minimum order is 1,000 pieces for shipment 30-45 days after order confirmation.
Comprehensive, resonance healthcare sets are a speciality of 10-year industry veteran Hong Kong Zhoulin BFS Co Ltd, whose founder, Dr Zhoulin, investigated the concept for more than 10 years.
"He eventually succeeded in simulating the human frequency spectrum and devising the necessary technology to provide health and therapeutic benefits in a user-friendly and affordable way," says marketing officer Suki Lee.
She says Zhoulin's breakthrough was quickly recognised by relevant authorities on the mainland and overseas, and led him to supplement a US-based laboratory with a manufacturing arm on the mainland.
"Our products have won many Chinese and international awards for innovation, technology and excellence," Lee claims. "They are patented in several countries, and we are CE-, ISO 9001- and ISO 13485-certified."
Zhoulin offers seven different healthcare models for different parts of the body. "Model WS-601 is a powerful unit that arches over the body while the user lies on the bed," she explains. "It radiates therapeutic effects to the back, chest, abdomen and legs."
Another model, WS-1117, is extendable. "The height and angle can be adjusted, and this moderately-powered unit is suitable for focal points such as the head, face, wrists, stomach, liver and lower abdomen."
Lee adds that Zhoulin does not have a minimum order requirement, and orders are usually shipped within 30 days of order confirmation.
Equally innovative is 27-year-old Fuji Dynamics Ltd, which has always focused on transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulators (TENS), electrical muscle stimulators (EMS), interferential stimulators and micro current stimulators. "Our products sell worldwide and give millions of people relief from almost all their pain," claims marketing manager Kenneth Pang.
The TENS devices are usually battery-operated, hand-held units. "TENS is the application of pulsed electrical current to the pain site through surface electrodes placed on the skin to treat acute, chronic, post-surgical and post-traumatic pain," Pang explains. "TENS principles gained recognition after more than a decade of R&D conducted in medical centres and pain clinics worldwide."
He says EMS, a safe and non-invasive technique for activating muscle, has been used for several years by therapists and physicians to keep muscles from losing their size during periods of inactivity. "With our portable EMS units, people can fully activate their muscles and get the benefit of exercise without stress," Pang claims.
These and other electronic healthcare products are manufactured on the mainland by the firm's ISO 9001-certified plant, which is MDD93/42/EEC, CE0120, ISO 13485 and FDA compliant.
FOB Hong Kong unit prices range from US$11.50-19.99, while the minimum order is 500 units. Delivery is 30 days after order confirmation under the FD TENS brand or customers' own labels.
Business in Hong Kong's electronic healthcare sector is clearly fast paced, highly stimulating and just what the doctor ordered when it comes to boosting sales.
