Keeping Households Healthy
Win Global Electrical Appliance Ltd offers several different humidifiers, including warm mist (shown) and ultrasonic models
Today's consumers are taking their well-being into their own hands, looking for appliances that not only help relieve ailments but also monitor optimum health. From massagers to concepts utilising acupuncture points, East meets West in Hong Kong's ever-widening choice of popular health aids.
Foremost among cutting-edge companies is Hong Kong Zhoulin BFS Co Ltd, which specialises in health appliances using a Bio Frequency Spectrum (BFS) concept. Marketing officer Suki Lee claims, "BFS helps improve health, circulation and body function by irradiating affected areas, or the relevant acupuncture points."
Established in 1993, the company's factory and head office in Beijing produces around 10 BFS products including health care sets, shoes and sauna houses.
"Our care sets simulate the body's spectrum and use irradiation to adjust the organs and ensure they are working normally," says Lee. "They are suitable for hospitals, clinics and home use, as the equipment comes with directions for treating affected areas and appropriate acupuncture points."
The company enjoys ISO 9001 certification and CE approval and has won nine international awards for its patented products. "Our products have also been tested by the Institute of Measurement Science of China to confirm they emit no harmful rays," adds Lee. "The main market is the Chinese mainland, followed by Europe and Asia."
There are no minimum order requirements and prices are available on request. Delivery is four weeks after order confirmation.
A more down-to-earth approach to health is taken by Yick Li Industrial (HK) Co Ltd, which produces a pedometer and two conductive pad massagers at its 5,000-square-metre mainland factory in Dongguan.
"We developed these products in response to customer demand," says marketing executive Chan Mei Ling. "Based on step distance and a person's weight, our pedometer can estimate the number of calories burned." The pedometer has an alarm and time function and easily clips on a wristband or belt.
The two conductive pad massagers are battery operated, adds Chan. "Our smaller model YL-978 has three massage modes - tapping, massaging and kneading - and five auto massage choices for shoulder, lower back, arms, joints and legs," she says.
The YL-981 model can be manual or automatic. "The manual function has tapping, manipulating and kneading options, and the auto massage courses are for shoulder, waist, leg and foot and the treatment of arthrosis."
The pedometer is available for US$2 per piece FOB Hong Kong, the YL-978 massager costs US$4, and the YL-981 massager US$5.50. Yick Li currently supplies the UK, Netherlands and US markets. Minimum order is 1,000 pieces delivered approximately 40 days after order confirmation.
Two particularly ingenious products are manufactured by 13-year-old watch and clock manufacturer Latitude Ltd; whose 11,000 square-metre-factory in Shenzhen has been producing Heart Meter and Gamma Master watches under the Latitude brand name for the past year.
"Our specialist digital watches have been developed using new technology in strategic partnerships with US companies," says business development director Ricky Law.
The Heart Meter watch is a heartbeat calculator based on ECG technology. "Most regular models require chest straps but ours can give heart rate measurements within 4-5 seconds by simply touching the front button sensor," he says. "It has a range of 40-200 beats per minute and a memory of 20 records with date and time stamp."
Fitness fanatics and those concerned about their heart rate can use the Heart Meter as a regular alarm watch with a 1/100 second chronograph, 42-lap memory and countdown timer.
Latitude's Gamma Master watch is highly specialised, detecting and measuring exposure to gamma radiation. "We are only the second company in the world to make this type of watch, which helps pilots, doctors and military personnel assess their exposure to dangerous gamma rays," claims Law.
The company's biggest market is Europe, followed by Japan. "We will continue to focus on Europe as it is a more mature market for specialised items," says Law.
The Heart Meter is priced at US$20 per piece FOB Hong Kong and the Gamma Master costs US$150 for minimum orders of 1,000 units delivered 60-90 days after order confirmation.
Other handy health monitors come from Leona Electronics Co Ltd, whose 500-square-metre factory in Dongguan produces a specialised range of 20 medication reminders and medical assessment calculators utilising different pharmaceutical and medical formulas.
The Coronary Risk-LDL Calculator, for example, calculates the risk of heart disease on a five and 10-year timescale, and includes LDL cholesterol calculations.
Other products include the Breast Cancer Assessment Calculator and the Diabetic Risk Calculator, which assesses risk according to information from the American Diabetes Association and includes blood sugar level monitoring and glucose unit conversion.
"Our most popular model is the Coronary Risk Calculator," explains CEO Leo Ho. "The medication reminders utilise a special alarm program that enables the user to input medication frequency according to medical advice, triggering the alarm to automatically signal the time to take the medication."
Europe accounts for 60% of Leona's business with the US taking the remainder. "We are also looking at new markets such as South America and Australia and are looking at developing new products related to calorie intake and nutrition."
Leona produces its standard range under its Medi-Cal brand and also accepts OEM orders. Product prices range from US$2.50-6.50 FOB Hong Kong per item. Delivery takes 45 days for a minimum order of 1,000 units.
