Hale & Hearty(HKTDC Electronics, Vol 02,2008)
Worldwide awareness of the need to protect and maintain health continues to grow by leaps and bounds
The very latest electronic technology is revolutionising the international healthcare industry, benefiting growing numbers of savvy consumers who appreciate the myriad benefits these innovative products can provide.
Hong Kong manufacturers are meeting this burgeoning demand for electronic healthcare products by dipping into their vast reservoirs of innovation and know-how.
EKS Asia Ltd, for example, has utilised new technologies to produce body analysers that are on the front line of product development, claims Marketing Executive Sandy Leung.
"With the innovation of Triple Aided Multi-frequency Measurement (TAMM) technology, EKS has made significant advances in body scale analyser design," she claims.
Ms Leung says the system is based on three frequencies - 52.6 kHz, 54 kHz and 56 kHz. "TAMM is unbeatable in its precision when it comes to the measurement of body fat and body water percentages," she maintains, claiming that EKS can provide its customers with the "ultimate in accuracy".
As a result, Ms Leung says, the company's US Food and Drug Administration-approved model 9580S1 and 8919V1 body analysers feature a memory bank for up to 12 people and can measure body fat and body water within 0.1% increments.
"Nowadays, people not only want to monitor their weight but increasingly want to keep check of their body fat, body water, muscle mass and bone mass," Ms Leung says. "Our body analyser scales therefore respond to one of the biggest trends in modern-day living, and can also calculate daily calorie requirements."
Keeping almost 90% of the company's design production capability in-house enables EKS to swiftly incorporate innovations devised by its R&D department, she believes.
"We are aware of the latest market trends and have responded by developing fresh colour lines and contemporary soft-touch coatings," Ms Leung reveals. "We also try to use environmentally friendly and recyclable materials in our production processes."
Innovation and technology know-how are also two of the drivers behind the talking thermometer range produced under Oriental Inspiration Ltd's Healthcare series, says Assistant Sales Manager Floria Tam.
"We produce extremely accurate talking thermometers that provide information in several different languages," explains Ms Tam, adding that the talk function can be turned off.
For example, the model HV-T55 talking thermometer with orange LCD on a black screen offers a measurement range of 32.0° - 42.9° Celsius (89.6° - 109.3° Fahrenheit) and accuracy to +/- 0.2° Celsius (+/- 0.4° Fahrenheit). "The HV-T55 model, which can read a temperature in about two seconds, also features a fever alert indicator and real-time calendar display," Ms Tam adds.
Oriental Inspiration's HV-T68 model also features talking and non-talking functions, real-time calendar display, three-temperature-range fever alert function and capacity to recall 30 previous temperature measurements. "Our thermometers meet CE 0123 requirements for the European market and also meet FDA requirements," Ms Tam notes.
All Oriental Inspiration's products are designed in-house by the company's R&D team. "We offer complete product development services to our clients, from product concept to mass production, including custom software development and product tooling," Ms Tam says.
Oriental Inspiration also produces body scales, kitchen scales and shower thermometers. "Moving into our sixth year of business, we continue to provide our customers with products that are advanced, easy to use, and above all, designed to meet customer needs," claims Ms Tam.
User-friendly alternatives to traditional wellbeing products are a key driver for Hong Kong Zhoulin BFS Co Ltd, according to Marketing Manager Suki Lee. "Our WS-602 Health Care Set is based on electronics and bionics," she explains.
Ms Lee says the CE-certified WS-602 Health Care Set, which is worn around the waist, has been designed to stimulate the body's natural frequency spectrum.
"Its light weight makes it easy to wear at home or on business trips," she claims, adding that the product has gained popularity with beauty salons and medical institutes. "We also offer new, more powerful WS-60 and WS-901A saunas, which are marketed under the Zhoulin brand name."
Taking a more down-to-earth approach to meeting the worldwide requirement for more a health-conscious lifestyle is Davidcraft Hong Kong Co's electronic Freshing Towel dispenser, which the company claims can help control germs and bacteria.
"Disinfectant or scented water can easily be added to suit a range of purposes, such as homes where there are children or babies," says Sales Manager Martin Chan.
The 19x27cm dispenser offers hot or cold water functions and holds about 80 regular-size moist towels. "Our one-touch, low-noise, electronic towel dispenser is ideal for home, office or restaurant use," says Chan, adding the universal connection also allows the dispenser to be installed in a car or boat.
When it comes to products that meet the needs of people of all ages, Hong Kong manufacturers have made the market for hale and hearty electronic healthcare items an integral part of their business.
