New ideas, stylish designs and multifunctions that help make life easier at home and in the office are driving Hong Kong manufacturers to create an ever-expanding selection of convenient electrical and home appliances.
Home appliance manufacturer Tai Yu Int'l Mfy Ltd, for example, is easing the workload of busy homemakers by offering more than 40 different products from its ISO 9001-certified, 700-worker factory in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland.
The company, which began 17 years ago in Taiwan by making parts for motors, now applies its expertise to manufacturing citrus juicers, juice extractors, blenders, blenders-cum-choppers, hand mixers, food steamers, toaster ovens, deep fryers, scales and other home items.
"We produce an average of 60,000 products per month with 60-70% of our business OEM," explains vice general manager Amy Ku. "We also manufacture our own popular MEXUS brand."
The company's best-selling items are its model 605 juice extractor and model 610 blender, says Ku, which are priced between US$8-9 per piece FOB Hong Kong for a minimum order of one TEU delivered 45 days after order confirmation.
"Our customers, who are largely from Europe and the US, are always looking for superior quality, reliability, innovative design and product speed, as well as new ideas," says Ku.
"For example, one of our latest products is the 550 watt, three-speed model T7611 Smoothie Maker with 1.8 litre jar."
Equally adept at spoiling customers for choice in popular home appliances is Kaeast Enterprise Ltd, which offers over 100 product models, including toasters, bread makers, kettles, sandwich makers and coffee makers.
"We have established a niche in these product categories and produce more than 250,000 pieces per month at our 50,000-square-metre factory in Jiangmen," explains marketing manager William Wan, adding that the 2,000-worker mainland plant is also ISO 9000-certified.
Kaeast specialises in toasters, bread makers and kettles and beats stiff competition by making something for everyone, from basic plastic models to more sophisticated stainless steel options.
"We produce more than 80 models of toasters, and have launched 10 new versions this year alone," explains Wan. "Customers want add-on features, so we provide defrost and reheat settings, bagel and bun warmer options, as well as digital and LED displays and alarm functions."
Wan says basic plastic remains the most popular material, but stainless steel, although more expensive, is increasingly attractive to customers.
Kaeast toasters range in price from US$3 FOB Shenzhen for plastic models to US$15 for those with digital and LED display features. Kettles cost US$5-13 each, depending on whether they are made of plastic or stainless steel, and bread makers sell for US$20-24.
The company delivers minimum orders of one TEU 40 days after order confirmation to its biggest market, Europe (60%), as well as Africa, Australia and the US. "We are looking to North America as an important market for the future," Wan reveals.
Also supplying markets worldwide with a range of useful products is 20-year-veteran promotional products and toy manufacturer Halifax Mfy (HK) Ltd.
"We offer cooler/warmers from the one-can size up to 12 litre capacity, although our most popular product is our mini cooler/warmer," explains sales manager Esther Chang.
These cooler/warmers are ideal for home or office use and come in a wide range of attractive colours. Halifax also produces fans, mini washing machines, mini sewing machines, health and beauty aids, and other home appliances at its 400-worker, ISO 9001-certified factory in Dongguan on the mainland.
Halifax's product prices average between US$20-30 FOB Hong Kong, making it popular hits in major markets such as the US, which accounts for 50% of sales, Japan (30%) and the UK (20%).
"All markets are looking for new ideas," claims Chang. "Customers want multifunction, all-in-one products and preferably in a small, convenient size - for example, we have just launched a new 100-240V AC Mini Ice Maker."
Veteran household electrical appliances company Sunny Electronic Co Ltd began life as a producer of hair care products but decided to specialise in motorised electronic household items, particularly food processors, blenders, juicers, choppers, graters and mixers.
"Consumers today want more power and faster, better processing for their foodstuffs," claims marketing director Frankie Chung.
However, when it comes to size and style, choices vary. "In our biggest market, Germany, other European markets and the US, customers want big, powerful food processors with multifunctions," says Chung. "But in Japan and Asia, where kitchens are small, they are looking for small, compact pieces."
One of Sunny's latest products, the K-650 650W food processor with blender set, offers six speeds, turbo and auto clean functions, a large two-litre blender bowl and a two-litre food processor bowl.
It also boasts a three-in-one interchangeable shredding/slicing disc, kneading hook, twin eggbeaters, chopping blade, citrus press set, juice extractor set and spatula.
The K-650 is made at the company's 600-worker mainland factory in Shenzhen, which produces 120,000 items per month. Prices range from US$4-26 FOB Hong Kong for minimum orders of one TEU delivered 45 days after order confirmation.
Showing yet again that Hong Kong manufacturers offer highly competitive prices, flexible orders and fast delivery to ease the daily grind of household duties worldwide.
