Constant emphasis on R&D has allowed Heroes Sound Equipment Co Ltd to become a powerful player on the audio equipment scene, particularly on the Chinese mainland.
The 21-year-old manufacturer, with a product range of woofers, speakers, power amplifiers, mixers and all-in-one PA systems, sports an experienced, 10-strong design team.
They seek inspiration from magazines, websites and trade fairs and make use of advance testing software and hardware such as LMS, Leap and CAD to incorporate such design innovations as smaller speakers.
"The trick is knowing just how small your models have to be to find yourself ahead of the trend rather than following it," says Heroes' managing director Sam Ming Tshin.
The ongoing focus on amplifiers and mixers will primarily be on digital devices rather than analogue models, says Sam, as digital models sport more advanced features and functions.
"Buyers can also expect to see more all-in-one PA systems come off the assembly line in coming months, but the main emphasis will continue to be on woofers and speakers that can be used in a wide range of venues such as stages, discos, stadiums and conference rooms," he adds.
MDF sourced from five factories on the Chinese mainland is still the main material used in Heroes' speakers. Plywood from Europe is also used extensively, but Heroes is currently sourcing plastic from the mainland to take advantage of its light weight.
For example, Heroes' 15-inch two-way plastic speaker weighs only 27 kilos, compared to its 45 kilo, 15-inch MDF counterpart. Yet, Sam does not believe that plastic speakers will overtake traditional MDF versions. "MDF is still better to use in design and gives better sound," he says.
All Heroes' products are manufactured at a 5,500-square-metre, 500-worker factory in Enping in Guangdong Province that boasts woofer and tweeter production areas as well as a metal workshop and QC and QA departments.
Some 20,000 speakers per month roll off the assembly lines bearing a variety of registered brands such as BOYIN, ETY, HOSVOICE and FULASI, the most well known of which is BOWAY.
OEM projects are also picking up and production currently stands at 30%, a figure Sam predicts will keep steady over the months to come. All products are tested to comply with international CE, AES, CCEE and IEC standards, while Heroes has also applied for ISO 9001 certification.
Heroes currently targets markets in Europe, the US, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and South America, with the US accounting for 15% of total sales. However, the market for more than 50% of its products is the mainland, reflecting Heroes' heritage as a Hong Kong and Chinese mainland joint venture. "Our quality is famous on the mainland," adds Sam.
