Adaptors & Chargers

Products that promote system compatibility are often A godsend. Adaptors and chargers fall into this category, and Hong Kong companies offer a wide variety of models to suit all needs
Helms-Man Industrial Co Ltd has focused on producing quality transformers and power supplies since its founding in 1975.
The company's K-series of switching mode USB adaptors with changeable country plugs (maximum rating 15 watts) features up to seven plugs and is ideal for charging MP3 players or audio speakers.
FOB Hong Kong prices for these adaptors range from US$2 for one plug up to US$3 for 4-5 plugs. "We can sell the plugs individually or as a set," says Assistant Marketing Manager Judy Ng.
Input for the K series is 100-240VAC 50-60Hz, and the output is 5VDC at 100-1000mA. Ms Ng says that higher-powered desktop adaptors sell for US$8-10 each.
The firm manufactures more than 100 models of linear and switching adaptors for use with telecom, office and IT equipment, household and personal appliances, electronic and RC toys, lighting, industrial tools and equipment and AV sets.
Safety approvals available include UL, CSA, GS, CB, CE, KETI, SEMKO, BSI, BEAB, BABT, SAA, PSE, CCC and Gost-R. Output is from 1.5-48V rated at 0.1-15W.
"Switching adaptors with a power range of 100-240V are the wave of the future," says Ms Ng. "They now account for 30% of our production, and we think that will grow to 50% in the next few years."
Production takes place at the firm's ISO 9000- and ISO 14000-certified factory in Huiyang on the Chinese mainland, which produces 120,000 units of certified linear and switching power supplies every day.
Minimum order requirement is 5,000 units for delivery 4-6 weeks after order confirmation to markets in Europe, the US, the UK, Japan, Korea and Australia.
Goldsphere Industries Co Ltd, with offices in Hong Kong and a factory in Guangdong Province on the mainland, specialises in the design and manufacture of wall plug and desktop adaptors, mounting and PCB-type transformers, coils and adaptor enclosures.
Adaptors account for 85% of the 300,000-500,000 units the company produces monthly. "We have more than 200-300 models," says Assistant Manager Ryan Sy, noting that FOB Hong Kong unit prices start at US$0.80.
Among the 17-year-old OEM/ODM firm's best-selling units are its Class 2 Power Unit and AC/DC Adaptor. The former delivers 120VAC 60Hz at 50-1200mA, and the AC/DC adaptor 230VAC 50Hz at 50-1000mA.
"Both are good quality units that sell at a reasonable price," Mr Sy says, adding that TUV, GS, CE, EMC, EMF, UL and CUL approvals are available.
Goldsphere exports to Europe, the US, Japan, the Middle East, Israel and Dubai among other markets. A minimum order of 1,000 pieces is required and delivery is 2-3 weeks after order confirmation.
Besides mass production, the firm engages in custom designs, prototypes and pilot runs. It can also provide engineering support to meet customers' needs.
AC/DC adaptors represent 80% of the 400,000-unit monthly production from Sandan Ltd's factory in Dongguan on the mainland. These are exported to Europe, the US, the Middle East, Asia and Canada. Established in 1991, the company also makes battery chargers, transformers and switching mode power supplies.
The firm's newest adaptor (about 10 different models are available) is designed in an elegantly curved figure-eight shape, allowing multiple units to fit into angled external sockets. "The design is unusual so we think it will do very well," says Marketing Manager Tony Lo.
The adaptor is meant for use with digital photo frames and computers, and offers an input range of 100-240VAC 50-60Hz and an output of 12VDC at 1,000-1,200mA.
This model is priced from US$2.40-2.90 each FOB Hong Kong, and features UL/CSA/CE and SAA safety approvals.
The ISO 9002-certified firm has a 500-piece minimum order requirement. "We have the flexibility to be able to handle small orders," Mr Lo adds, stating that delivery is 2-3 weeks after order confirmation.
Meanwhile, Fuhua Electronic (HK) Co Ltd has a new, 5W USB switching power Adaptor that accepts six interchangeable AC plugs (UL/EU/BSI/Korea/SAA and CCC builds).
The FOB Hong Kong unit price is US$2-3 depending on the order quantity (excluding the AC plugs).
"A USB adaptor is very convenient for people with USB-configured electronic items," says General Manager Celia Ng. "An iPod, mobile phone, MP3 or PDA unit can be charged with this device."
The unit, which has TUV/CE/CCC/PSE-JET/C-Tick/TLC/Keti and cULus safety approvals, features inputs from 100-240VAC at 50-60Hz and an output of 5VDC at 100-1000mA.
Minimum order is 3,000 pieces, with shipments going out about 30-40 days after order confirmation.
Well-known for its switching adaptors and mobile phone chargers, ranging from 1-60W, ISO9001-certified Fuhua Electronic manufactures five million units per month at its factory in Dongguan and exports worldwide.
Founded in 1989, the firm has developed different series of adaptors that have been awarded approvals for IT, AV, medical and other applications. "We want to do more in the medical area," says Ms Ng.
On this evidence, Hong Kong's ongoing reputation for quality and reliable electronic devices such as adaptors seems assured.
