Rosy Electronics Co delivers coils seven days after order confirmation to markets in Europe, Taiwan and other parts of Asia

Aconstant focus on quality, a wide range of products and strong demand from personal electronics makers look set to keep the Hong Kong coils industry buoyant.

One typically upbeat manufacturer is Kentron Industrial Co, which mainly produces switching transformers and coils for fax machine, personal computer and power supply unit manufacturers.

According to general manager William Ho, this wide range of applications ensures steady business. "Our buyers demand exceptionally high quality parts, which is why we painstakingly source only top-grade raw materials."

Kentron's main markets are western Europe, including France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, although the ISO 9001-certified company is also expanding into other areas such as the US and South America.

A three-strong Hong Kong-based R&D team also adds value, sending a steady stream of product designs and innovations to a 40,000-square-foot, 150-staff factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland.

This facility manufactures more than 15 models, producing around one million units a month, mainly on an OEM basis although Kentron has its own Kentron brand.

The company's products are available in minimum quantities of about 5,000 units, which can be delivered 25-35 days after order confirmation.

"Most of our staff have been with us for more than five years, and we conduct plenty of in-house training to keep our people up to date with the latest production techniques," adds Ho.

Equally prolific is Thai Lin Radio Coil Mfy Ltd, which claims to differentiate itself from its competitors through a wide range of coils and transformers.

Administration manager Tsui Che Tat maintains that "other manufacturers offer only a few styles, but we give our clients a wide choice of wattages and sizes".

Established in 1975, Thai Lin has a 10-strong design team and a laboratory capable of conducting about a dozen US UL506 and UL1585 transformer standard tests a year.

"Now we are able to very rapidly produce product samples for clients, even for items that are not on our product list," Tsui insists. "Quality standards are also important, and we hope to finalise our ISO 14000 application within the next year to complement our ISO 9001 certification."

Thai Lin's 222,000-square-foot facility in Dongguan produces two million units a month, with minimum orders of 1,000 pieces delivered in 30-45 days.

Similarly experienced, Gauss Electronics Co Ltd manufactures small transformers and trigger coils for use in everything from household electronics and digital products to telecom devices.

"From the start, we have focused on making components for small products suitable for personal items," recalls executive secretary Silon Tang. "With these types of product becoming ever smaller, our experience has proved highly suited to manufacturing for these industries."

The 21-year-old company shifted production to the mainland in the late 1980s and manufactures in two Dongguan factories with a total floor space of 3,500 square metres.

The firm's 600 employees deliver minimum orders of 1,000 pieces per model within four weeks to clients in the US, Europe, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and the mainland.

"Clients are always raising the bar in terms of product specifications, and we've had to match that by greatly increasing our sample range, raising manufacturing efficiency and investing in state-of-the-art machinery," adds Tang.

Gauss has even designed its own winding machine for air and high voltage trigger coils to keep costs down, speed production and facilitate larger volumes.

"We are also renowned for our high voltage products, which are typically used in items such as gas stoves," asserts Tang. "Previously, this market segment was dominated by a handful of large companies, but after improving our manufacturing processes and reducing costs we have managed to supply this sector for 2-3 years."

Taking a different tack is Mainstar Industries Ltd, which produces mainly toroidal coils used in computers, telecom items and audio equipment and the self-bound coils found in telephone cards, credit cards and contact-less smart cards.

Assistant sales manager Karen Huang believes that the number of applications for the latter product is set to surge, particularly with major retailers pushing their logistics service providers to use radio frequency identification for inventory control.

"Self-bound coils currently only account for about 1-2% of sales, but we feel that this will increase and are investing heavily in R&D," she explains.

Mainstar's 20-strong R&D team complements 300 staff at its 60,000-square-foot factory in the mainland's Guangdong Province, who produce about two million units per month.

These are available in minimum order quantities that vary according to product but can be delivered in 30-120 days depending on availability of materials.

"We pride ourselves on our quality and speed of service, and rely on our close ties with clients to ensure that we invest our R&D resources wisely," Huang insists. "We have a 24-hour turnaround for client queries, and can produce customer-specific product samples within 7-10 working days."

Given such switched-on producers, buyers should be able to source plenty of high quality, competitively priced coils from Hong Kong component suppliers.
