Transforming Consumer Electronics

ISO 9001-certified Coils Electronic Co Ltd produces the core raw materials for its coils, making its pricing very competitive

Electronic products are developed at bewildering speed. However quickly they are launched, the power supplies of all electrical and electronic goods are dependent on coil-based components such as transformers, filters, chokes and inductors.

Manufacturing these crucial units - in many respects the heart of the appliances on which we all depend in so many ways - is a highly labour intensive process, and customers demand both quality and competitive pricing.

Recent years have seen Hong Kong companies establishing or working with factories on the Chinese mainland to produce quality coil-based components meeting the highest international manufacturing standards, as Ida Tang, general manager of Coils Electronic Co Ltd explains.

"We have vertical integration, so we are not only an assembling factory," she explains. "We can produce the core raw materials ourselves, so the pricing is very competitive."

Coils Electronic has been in business since 1979 and produces under both the CEC and Coils brand names at a 50,000-square-metre factory employing 5,500 workers in Zhong Shan on the Chinese mainland.

Tang claims Coils Electronic, which has ISO 9001 certification, is one of the leading manufacturers in Asia. "Our major markets are Japan and Europe but our business is worldwide," she adds.

Coils Electronic also prides itself on rapid order turnaround. Minimum orders of 1,000 units at FOB prices on request can usually be achieved in as little as a week after order confirmation.

Rapid response to the demands of a fast-moving industry is also a specialty of Far East Electronics Co, another veteran in the field established in 1975. The company has its own FE brand and produces five million transformers, coils and solenoids a month at a 6,000-square-foot factory on the mainland that employs 600 workers. The company's customers in the US, Europe, Japan and Southeast Asia Co expect to receive their coils just five days after an order has been acknowledged. Minimum orders and FOB prices are available on request.

Although coils are always in demand, Kenlott Electronics Co Ltd marketing manager Stephen Lam points out that new products stimulate a need for additional production and that the 16-year-old company has benefited in recent years from the use of its components in new audiovisual and home cinema equipment.

"Our major markets are all over the world and our clients are everywhere from the US and Germany to Australia. Hong Kong is also a big market for us for items such as DVD players," explains Lam.

Kenlott, according to Lam, is constantly working to gear components such as coils, inductors, transformers and solenoids ever more closely to changing trends in consumer electrical and electronic goods.

"We have a 126,000-square-foot factory on the Chinese mainland which also does R&D work so we are constantly working to improve our major products, which are coils and inductors," he explains. "The economy has not been very good and that has had an effect but we have been able to maintain a good position in the market."

ISO 900-certified Kenlott, which manufactures under the Kenlott and Coiltech brand names, has no minimum order policy and prefers to discuss FOB prices with individual clients.

Another successful manufacturer, Kentron Industrial Co, celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and general manager William Ho is looking forward to another profitable decade.

"Our main products are switching transformers and different kinds of winding coils - every kind of electrical product, be it a machine or a computer, needs these," he notes.

Ho is the first to acknowledge however that the company operates in a competitive marketplace and points to rigorous quality control in both sourcing and manufacturing as the key to its success.

"Quality is our watchword," he insists. "Our raw materials are imported from Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Germany and we place a strong emphasis on quality control."

"We are experts in this area and we have Hong Kong supervisors in our factories in Guangdong Province who make sure that quality is maintained," he stresses.

Kentron prides itself on delivering minimum orders of 1,000 pieces within 25-35 days, subject to material availability, to major markets such as Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, the US and South America.

These markets and the company's European business links helped it maintain profitability during the Asian economic crisis. "Demand has been quite stable lately in the European markets, and I'm confident of expanding our capacity this year," says Ho.

Mainstar Industries Ltd has built its business by meeting the needs of major manufacturers of electronic consumer goods at affordable FOB prices available on request.

"At Mainstar we believe in high quality at competitive prices," states sales co-ordinator Karen Huang. The company was established in 1986 and has an extensive range of coil-based products, including communication transformers, modem transformers, choke coils, line filters, toroidal chokes, switching transformers and inductors. It manufactures one million units per month under the Mainstar brand at a 50,000-square-foot factory employing 300 workers in Zhen Long, Guangdong Province, and can deliver within 30-120 days of order confirmation.
