Lighting

Gzinco Industrial Co combines form with function, offering a diverse range of lighting products like this abstract table lamp
Lighting is an essential element in any home, and as much a part of the overall ambiance of a room as the furniture

The selection of lighting products from Hong Kong is diverse, often innovative and usually the perfect choice to meet all needs. For example, Excel Art Int'l Ltd believes that one of its main advantages is the ability to understand trends in the European market.

"The majority of our business is done in Europe, where people have a deeper appreciation of art and especially hand-crafted items," says Director Victor Tang.

"Europe has a long and rich history with great art, and people grew up with this influence. In turn, this seems to make them more willing to purchase expensive, often unique items, compared with buyers in other markets."

As an example, he describes a classic decorative lamp that enjoys good demand and features powder-painted sheet glass. "The painted image is given depth by the use of soft, warm lighting." In addition to painted lamps, another popular lighting trend is the crystal chandelier. "I am not sure how long this trend will continue, but many companies are heading in that direction and, as a result, I predict that prices will drop significantly," says Mr Tang.

The company's lighting products range in price from US$8-30 each, and new products are introduced every three months. "In addition to introducing new products, we also try to come up with new techniques in design and finishes," says Mr Tang.

Specialising in ceramic products, Wing Tai Porcelain Mfy Ltd currently has more than 5,000 lamps in its collection and introduces new models every three months.

All lamps come with ceramic bases that can be given different finishing treatments. Popular choices for the shade fabric are faux leather and suede.

For example, model SL2093-803CH is a 53cm-high table lamp that features a suedette shade and base with grooves. The lamp is available in four colours - toffee, brown, green and black - and is unit-priced at approximately US$6 FOB Hong Kong.

"We have five in-house designers that create our diverse range of lamps," comments Export Manager Joe Szeto, adding that fashion trends are one of the key inspirations for the company's lamp designers and that currently the trend is towards simple designs.

"The quality of the product is reflected in the choice of material," he continues. "Apart from being long-lasting, our unique ceramic lamps deliver a message of elegance and style. This is a major reason why our lamps are so popular."

Offering a range of floor, desk and spot lamps and ceiling and track lighting, is Extra Light (HK) Electrical Co Ltd. They all feature modern designs that incorporate the latest trends.

"We have in-house designers that create fashionable lighting products and some designs are from customers. Approximately 50% of our customers are retailers, including department stores," says Operations Manager Hendry Chan. "A variety of materials are used, including aluminium, glass, paper, chrome, wood and plastic."

The company introduces new products in April and October each year, and currently has more than 2,000 models on offer. One new product is model ELF-5135, a 2-in-1 water fountain/light that features a mist-maker with 12 LEDs that change colour, an adjustable air pump, and a 12-piece decorative ball. The lamp is 79cm in height and is priced at approximately US$23 each FOB Hong Kong.

"This decorative lamp is popular with customers because of its multifunction features that create a relaxed and harmonious environment," comments Mr Chan.

The functions he refers to include the use of tap water to create the steaming, coloured mist; the changing colour lights of red, blue and yellow; low voltage operation; and no heat, chemicals or dry ice or pollution.

The lamp comes in two colour choices: a blue base and plain glass plate or a silver base and a blue glass plate. The decorative ball can be customised for different colour options or designs depending on the customer's needs.

Mr Chan says LED lights that change colour are a growing trend in the industry, while environmental considerations are another. "The energy-saving lamp is a key trend," he comments.

Extra Light has its own R&D and engineering teams working on new product development. "We always take trends into account as a way to remain at the forefront of design," Mr Chan remarks, adding that one of the firm's core competitive strengths is its six hi-tech machinery, production lines.

"The production lines include moulding facilities, plastic-moulding injection, forming and pressing, automatic spray lines and an electroplating division," he says.

Obviously, partnering with Hong Kong lighting suppliers almost guarantees a well-lit road to success.
