Never- ending Power
Jeckson Electric Co Ltd manufactures Jeckson brand battery chargers that recharge batteries in 30 minutes to 2.5 hours
Consumers who want battery chargers that can be used globally and recharge in the shortest possible time have had their demands answered by Hong Kong manufacturers, who have years of experience in this testing field.
For example, Shun Shing Standard Corporation Development Ltd has been making battery chargers for 30 years, under its own brand name and for OEM customers.
"We are flexible with lead times, design and production, and we make high quality products," notes marketing manager Raymond Lam, who claims Shun Shing can also provide a more "individualised" service.
Popular models include the two-hour worldwide voltage 'slim fast' charger (BC010FC), which features 100-240V power input and holds up to four AA or AAA batteries. It also has an automatic safety cut-off and can detect defective or non-rechargeable batteries.
Similarly, the 'always ultra fast' charger (BC017UFA) can recharge AAA batteries in 40 minutes and AA batteries in 55 minutes and is powered by an external AC adaptor, car lighter plug or USB port.
Lam notes that the latter also comes in a range of bright colours. "This charger is very popular and we introduced the colour range to provide more options for our customers," he explains. "The feedback from customers has been very positive."
Shun Shing's 80,000-square-foot, 600-plus worker factory on the Chinese mainland produces two million battery chargers a month, which are sold to the US, Europe and Asia in minimum order quantities of 3,000 units delivered in 3-4 weeks.
Another long-term success is Jeckson Electric Co Ltd, which was established in 1975 and counts the US, Europe and Japan among its main markets. "Continual focus on design innovation has made Jeckson one of the long-term leading manufacturers of battery chargers on the Chinese mainland," claims assistant marketing manager Karen Cheung.
The company offers a wide range of chargers, including the patent-pending compact model 21-00103 that can charge up to four AA or AAA batteries in only 30 minutes, the two-battery compact model 21-1284F, and model 21-00105, which can be used in the car and takes an average 2.5 hours to charge as many as four batteries.
Jeckson also manufactures a charger designed for products that are heavy on power consumption.
"Model 21-0012A is a one-hour charger that is ideal for power hungry or digital appliances such as CD players, digital cameras and personal digital assistants," says Cheung.
The ISO 9001- and ISO 14001-certified manufacturer requires minimum orders of 3,000 pieces, produced under its own Jeckson brand or on an OEM basis at its 11,500-square-metre, 1,000-worker factory in Huizhou on the mainland.
Kolvin Industries Ltd is also an experienced manufacturer that claims to focus on both long-term and new customers. "We concentrate on new product development, which we offer to existing customers as a priority," insists senior marketing manager Evang Wong.
The majority of Kolvin's chargers have the ability to charge a variety of battery sizes from AAA to D and 9V, with the main difference being a choice of either a detachable power cord or direct plug-in.
The company's most popular models are those in the medium price range, such as KBS2002 and KBS3002 that charge in 2-4 hours and models KBS60E and KBS302E, the former charging in one hour and the latter in 30 minutes. "Our customers make their buying decisions on the price point as they know all our chargers are good quality," Wong declares.
Kolvin, which manufactures 300,000 pieces per month under both ODM and OEM terms at its 800,000-square-foot factory in Shenzhen on the mainland, requires a minimum order of 5,000 pieces for delivery in 40-60 days to the US, Europe and Asia.
Although his company was only established in 1995, Powerbase Industrial (HK) Ltd director Vincent Chung believes that being the 'new' player is to his firm's advantage. "Although some competitors have been established for 30 years, they mainly produce standard and linear chargers, not the switching and rapid chargers we manufacture," he explains, claiming "it is often difficult for long-term players to introduce strategic changes and new technology, but we are not hindered by these factors."
Typical Powerbase models include C-401 and C-501 switching chargers that come with electronic adaptors for use globally and take from 1-3 hours to charge, and the C-102 rapid charger that charges in a shorter time because the output current is higher.
All Powerbase models are available under the Powerbase brand or on OEM terms with minimum orders of 10,000 pieces delivered 20-30 days after order confirmation to major markets such as the US, Germany, Australia and Japan. "There is more and more demand for chargers that can be used in any country and can fully charge batteries within 1-3 hours," Chung concludes.
Which means that not only will battery charger buyers continue to post profitable sales, but the world's energy-hungry consumers will also never run out of power if they insist on proven products from Hong Kong.
