Atom Industrial Ltd produces digital baby monitors featuring adjustable digital sensitivity, LED indicators, key locks and volume control

Digital technology has taken the baby monitor business into the 21st century, where Hong Kong manufacturers continue to provide cutting edge products at excellent prices.

Typical of the local companies offering new technology for baby monitors is nine-year-old Atom Industrial Ltd, which has extensive experience in producing high-frequency radio products.

"Our range includes the basic BUM318, the LCD digital BUM8038 and BUM618 and the two-way monitor BUM9038," explains marketing manager Audrey Lai.

The BUM8038 is a hi-tech 24-hour babysitter that comprises a digital LCD transmitter-receiver and a 24-channel digital pilot tone to avoid interference during transmission.

It has an effective range of 300 metres, adjustable digital sensitivity, power LED indicator, key lock, digital volume control and reception indicator, low battery alarm and out-of-range alarm. "Its petite size also enhances its marketability," adds Lai.

Production takes place at the company's 100,000-unit monthly capacity factory in Guangzhou on the Chinese mainland, while exports reach the US and almost every major market in Europe.

Available in a range of colours, minimum order is 3,000 sets for delivery 60 days after confirmation of order. Atom is ISO 9001-certified and all products comply with R&TTE and FCC directives and requirements.

Claiming to be the world's largest manufacturer of baby monitors is 20-year-old Eagletron Telecommunications Ltd, which manufactures on behalf of many famous household brands.

"We offer our own designs and also accept OEM/ODM projects," says general manager and director Damien Liu. "New models include the FM radio nursery monitor (ETL-8880 RN); baby monitors New Life (ETL-8870) and Baby Fun (ETL-8820); and nursery camera Vision-Cute (NC-2000A)."

Eagletron's patent-pending ETL-8880 RN is packed with features. "It operates as an FM radio that switches automatically to baby monitor mode when sound is detected in the nursery," explains Liu.

Other features of the AC- or battery-operated ETL-8880 RN include advanced surface-mount technology, long operating range, a soft antenna, and optional night-light and battery-recharging stand.

Apart from audio, video is also in vogue. "Digital technology makes it possible to incorporate compact cameras in baby monitors available in cheerful colours and various shapes suitable for the nursery," notes Liu.

FOB Hong Kong prices for Eagletron's wireless audio baby monitors range from US$15-35 per set, while those with video cost up to US$80. ISO 9001-, ISO 14001- and EN 46001-certified, Eagletron sources materials and components on the mainland, Taiwan and Japan.

Production takes place at a 2,000-worker plant in Dongguan on the mainland, and the annual output is about three million sets. The minimum order is 1,000 sets per model per shipment for delivery 60 days after confirmation of order. Major markets include the US and Europe.

Exporting to the US and Europe is equally important to Chit Shun Enterprises Co Ltd. Some of this 13-year-old manufacturer's range of colourful baby monitors double as convenient night-lights.

"Our new models are the BB-101, BB-102 and BB-103," says senior marketing executive Penny Ng. "They are reliable and cute looking and the night-light is a popular feature."

The receiver in the BB range of baby monitors incorporates a signal light, a volume on/off switch and a high quality speaker; while the transmitter includes a power on indicator and a condenser microphone.

"All units have an operation range of approximately 100 metres and selectable two-channel operation to minimise interference," explains Ng. "They operate on alkaline batteries or an AC/DC adaptor." Neither the batteries nor the AC/DC adaptor are included. "All baby monitors can be PMS colour-matched to buyers' specifications," Ng adds.

Production takes place at a 100-worker, 8,000-square-foot factory in Dongguan. Raw materials, parts and components are sourced from the mainland, Taiwan and Japan, and processed into 200,000 products a month. The minimum order is 3,000 sets for shipment 60 days after order confirmation. Prices are available on application.

Also incorporating night-lights in baby monitors is Flying Dragon Electronic Co Ltd, established in 1981. "All of our baby monitors are safety products that provide peace of mind while baby sleeps," says business manager Irene Chong.

New model FD-2200VA is a voice-activated baby minder and night-light that also includes an out-of-range warning with an LED indicator, a four-LED signal level indicator, and a low battery indicator.

Also new is the compact baby-minder FD-D4, a voice-activated unit with various code settings for standby mode, battery level, volume, out-of-range warning and signal strength displayed on the LCD indicator. There is also a telescopic antenna.

"We are a major manufacturer of baby monitors," says Chong, "and this is reflected in the attention to details such as colour-coded function keys, relatively low power supply/voltage requirements and the quality and appearance of our units."

Flying Dragon manufactures 20,000-40,000 baby monitors a month on the mainland in Shenzhen. The company sources raw materials, parts and components from Hong Kong, the mainland, Japan, Taiwan and Malaysia.

Prices range from US$11-30 per set FOB Hong Kong, and the minimum order is 1,000 sets per shipment for delivery 30-45 days after order confirmation. All models come with AC/DC adaptors and some include recharging bases and regular or rechargeable batteries depending on the client's needs.

Ever popular, state-of-the-art baby monitors such as these are clearly crying out to take good care of future generations.
