Gearing Up For Business

The automobile has achieved such iconic status that it has spawned an entire accessories industry. Whether to keep the car clean and tidy, provide important equipment for emergency breakdowns or help to hone driving skills, Hong Kong manufacturers are a driving force in the auto accessories business.
Icon III Industrial Co, for example, helps drivers stay in touch by specialising in electronic premiums and products, including hands-free telephone accessories. Some 500 workers produce more than 70 product styles at the company's four-floor factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland.
Its most recent line offers hands-free earphone and headphone accessories for mobile phones, which have become increasingly popular with drivers, and several hands-free items designed specifically for car-use.
"Our Universal Wireless Infrared Hands-free Car Kit can be used with any mobile phone and is one of our best sellers," says sales manager Michelle Cheng.
Introduced in 2002, the neat, stylish infrared unit fits comfortably in any vehicle. "We also have a less expensive hands-free strap, with or without adaptor, which can be used with a specific mobile brand," she adds.
Other popular car accessory products include the Extendable and Retractable Hands-free Kit, the four-in-one Emergency Charger Kit, and the Universal Wireless Hands-free Kit.
Two of the company's most popular items are its portable hands-free strap and its hands-free cable and speaker with mono earphone, which is a best seller in Europe.
"Europe accounts for 80% of our hands-free accessory sales and the US for 20%," explains Cheng. "Popular colours for accessories are still stylish black and silver, although dark blue, hot red and light grey are also in vogue."
The minimum order size is negotiable and delivery is 15-20 days after order confirmation for personal hands-free cables or 25-30 days for premiums and car kits.
Joyce Park Industrial Ltd is committed to improving driving skills. Some 100 workers at its mainland Dongguan factory produce two specialised driving aids, a wireless infrared parking sensor and a car direction compass.
"Our wireless parking sensor uses ultrasonic waves to detect nearby objects, thus helping drivers to park," says assistant sales and products manager Lam Chun Wa. "It is very popular with buses and trucks as there are no wires involved."
The sensor, which fits neatly onto the bumper and the front of the dashboard, was introduced in 2001. Currently, some 10,000 sensors are produced per month at an FOB Hong Kong price of HK$250 per set.
Joyce Park's direction compass is equally useful at an FOB Hong Kong price of HK$78 per unit. "Introduced in 2002, our compass uses a Philips' sensor to detect direction," explains Lam.
The company is also developing a vehicle forward-movement detector, expected to be available in June/July this year. "The unit uses infrared and radio frequency techniques to measure bumper-to-bumper distance and an alarm warns the driver if he is too close to another vehicle," explains Lam.
Joyce Park mainly exports to the US as it has FCC approval for its parking sensor. The minimum order is 1,000 pieces and delivery is 15-25 days after order confirmation.
Helping drivers make light work of cleaning duties and prepare for emergency situations is Fee Tat Holdings (HK) Ltd.
The company started in 1970, manufacturing battery-operated lanterns, and has since expanded its product lines that now encompass more than 80 models. These include multifunction rechargeable lanterns; electronic bug killers; battery operated portable lights and lanterns; car polishers; engine jump starters; and rechargeable car vacuum cleaners.
"Many of our products are suitable as car accessories, and some, such as our spotlights, are specially equipped with car plugs," says export manager Peter Ho. "Our most popular product is our multipurpose rechargeable lantern."
Prices for Fee Tat's auto accessories range from FOB Hong Kong US$4-36 for models 2329 and 2329A portable power source with jump starter and emergency light.
The company has more than 800 workers at its 100,000-square-metre factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland that is ISO 9001-certified.
Fee Tat produces its own brand, FEETAT, as well as undertaking OEM assignments. "Our most popular markets are the Middle East and Africa, which account for 70% of our business. We also hope to expand in the US and Europe," says Ho.
Fee Tat sources plastic from Taiwan and its minimum order is 500 pieces per model for delivery 30 days after order confirmation.
Halifax Mfy (HK) Ltd is a 20-year-old gifts and premiums supplier also producing a host of auto accessories, including air fresheners, ice scrapers, door lock de-icers, car vacuum cleaners and spot lights. It also manufactures a range of attractive multifunction mini coolers and warmers that are extremely useful on any car trip.
"We are a reputable supplier and have more than 600 workers at our 12,000-square-metre factory in Dongguan on the mainland," says marketing manager Henry Chang. "We are equipped with 3D CAD/CAM systems for direct data interface from our in-house R&D department."
The company sources raw materials on the mainland and overseas. Major export markets are the US, Japan, and Europe, while a minimum order is 5,000 pieces for delivery 25-35 days after order confirmation.
