In 1991, it was a case of sheer survival when Harvest Way Ltd, incorporated in 1978, switched from the manufacturing of electronic parts to finished goods in the face of fierce competition - a decision that proved correct.
"Today, we offer a wide array of electronic goods ranging from radios to alarm clocks to sports timers, recorders, thermometers and calculators. All come with practical functions and clever designs that enable us to continue carving a niche in a very competitive market," says marketing manager Cora Tse.
Harvest Way also offers very flexible services to its clients. "Apart from working on OEM and ODM orders, our design team, with members from Hong Kong, Australia and Europe, regularly creates new items for our customers' perusal," she says.
"Our range includes popular items such as loudspeakers, designed in the shape of cones for computers, MP3 and CD players. We also have a table clock conjured into a talking alien that comes with various language options, and an LED key-holder in the form of a robotic rhino. Such interesting designs click the buying impulses of our customers," enthuses Tse.
Among the company's latest range is a product combining a vase and a radio in a hi-tech, elegant design.
"Many of our designs blend well with a lifestyle concept as they appeal as corporate premiums or personal gifts," says Tse.
Underlining an essential point she claims makes customers feel very comfortable when buying from Harvest Way, Tse adds: "We patent and design-register all our original creations because it is important for buyers to ensure there is no risk of infringing any intellectual property rights claimed by other companies. This is especially true for those with internationally famous brand names."
Europe and the US are major markets, accounting for 70% of all exports. The rest is absorbed by Asian countries. Customers include companies such as Philips, Coca-Cola, Carlsberg, Duracell, Mild Seven and Marathon Sports.
On top of creative ingenuity, high quality products and competitive pricing continue to win over many loyal customers. "I believe they appreciate our highly-integrated manufacturing facilities in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. We take full control and responsibility for everything, from product design and engineering development to the manufacturing process and eventual shipping," says Tse.
The factory consistently upgrades its machinery to match advances in technology. The engineering team also follows the production process to ensure maintenance of stringent quality control.
"We do everything in-house and our prices are highly competitive. We also guarantee our quality," assures Tse.
A 40,000-square-foot, 500-worker factory peaks production at about 500,000 items a month. "We acquired ISO 9001 certification in 2002, and all our products meet the safety standards required by our clients in their respective markets," she says.
Looking ahead, Tse says Harvest Way aspires to expand its market by taking part in trade fairs targeting the Japan market.
