Security & Safety Products

Leeds Electronic Engineering Ltd manufactures the Homeguard LS200 Digital Alarm System featuring is simple microprocessor-controlled system with a magnetic switch, motion detector and extension Siren Speaker.

SECURITY is not just an international issue facing governments but also one of great concern to householders. In response, Hong Kong offers security and safety products with an abundance of different features to meet the needs of a tight but dynamic market segment.

Thirty-year-old Leeds Electronic Engineering Ltd is a medium-sized manufacturer of security systems. The company uses in-depth experience and know-how to ensure its products incorporate the latest technological developments.

"We design and develop complete alarm systems including detection devices, control units and warning devices," says general manager Michael Lui. "We also produce all the component parts of each system and offer both wired and wireless systems."

The company has a series of DIY systems that are simple-to-install, plug-in systems. There is also a voice dialler that, when the control panel receives a signal from the detector, dials a preset number and delivers a pre-recorded message.

Also on offer are a key-operated alarm system, model LS300 at US$15, and a digital alarm system, model LS200, at US$18.90. The minimum order for both is 5,000 pieces per order.

Another model, wireless security alarm system LS2500, is unit priced at US$53 per item and the minimum order is 500 pieces. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.

"We do our own R&D so we can do quite a number of different things," says Lui. "Using brand name programmable chips, we write our own software and programs to save costs. This is especially useful for us to simplify operational procedures for our DIY wireless products."

He says the security products market is not very big. "As a medium-sized company, unless an order is for a reasonable quantity it is not really worth developing chips in-house. However, having this in-house capability does allow us to handle smaller orders of a specialized nature," he says.

The main market for Leeds Engineering is Europe, with the UK accounting for most orders.

New Night Lighting Mfg Ltd generally specializes in lighting products, but includes in its range an infrared alarm-cum-door chime.

Assistant general manager Vinnie Wu says, "Model PIR-ADC-2 alerts the resident if someone is approaching the house. We found a lot of interest in infrared products among our buyers and that is why we include the alarm-door chime model in our range."

The FOB Hong Kong unit price of this model is HK$27.10, while the minimum order is 3,000 pieces.

"While battery-operated devices are popular, we also provide a version complete with an AC adaptor," says Wu.

The company sells under the Winsun brand name or private labels and Europe is the main market. Raw materials come from the Hong Kong stockists of leading names like GE or Mitsubishi, or direct from the US.

Sundial Enterprise Co produces safety and security products for home use and always with some innovative features. The company's smoke alarm model, with a low-battery indicator, also has a convenient off switch in case the user needs a cigarette or is using the unit in a smoky kitchen.

"Like regular smoke detectors, ours generally fit on the ceiling to detect rising smoke," says marketing manager Raymond Mak.

Mak says that apart from smoke alarms, personal alarms are also popular selling lines at present and Sundial offers a pocket-sized mini personal alarm for children or females.

"If they encounter a suspicious looking stranger or realize something is wrong they can quickly activate the alarm by just pulling out a pin. It's a simple device but quite effective," he says. Sundial also produces an intruder alarm with a safety light.

The 1983-established company manufactures an average of 50,000 units per month and production tops out at 100,000. OEM and ODM orders are accepted. The minimum order is 2,000 units for shipment 4-6 weeks after order confirmation.

Major markets are Japan and Europe, and products may bear any one of four brand names: Firealert, Hutech, Greenair or Sportarms. Raw materials such as ABS and fire resistant plastics come from Japan and Taiwan.

Keystone Electronics Co Ltd produces a ceiling mounted CCD camera, model VC-2, that has a 1/3-inch sensor, produces black-and-white or colour, and runs off a 12V DC power supply. The FOB Hong Kong unit price is US$128 per piece and the minimum order is 500 pieces.

This company also offers a wireless home security system, model KS5000, at US$95 per piece. This unit has seven hardwired or wireless zones and uses LEDs. Delivery time is 60 days.

Established in 1977, Meyer Electronics Ltd produces home security alarms and other devices in the security and safety field.

Typical of the range are Door Guard model DG3F, unit priced at US$5.60, and Traveller's Alarm model BA, unit priced at US$4.50. Both prices are FOB Hong Kong. The brand name is Meyer, and the company's goods sell mainly in the US, Canada and Europe.

Meyer has been awarded recognition for its quality management system with CE Marking Conformity certification, and its organization complies with ISO 9000 requirements, while the Chinese mainland plant is ISO 9002-certified.

Monthly production is approximately 20,000 pieces per model while the minimum order is 500 units for any model. Delivery time is between 30-45 days after receipt of L/C.
