It looks like the ubiquitous automobile will be with us in its present form for some time to come, and that means continual demand also for the handy and useful add-ons that go hand-in-hand with motoring.
Playing its part is 1999-established Checkey Ltd, which offers a range of car accessories that includes magnetic feet massagers, neck massagers, mesh fabric car side window sunshades, side window sunshades in cardboard, spare wheel covers, twin-trunk pop-up storage bins and car seat organisers.
Other car accessories available are air refreshers, hands-free car kits, storage bins of various kinds, spare storage bins for trucks, steering wheel covers and car seat covers.
"The car seat organiser is a very good seller. It slings onto the back of the driver's seat, for example, so is intended for the passengers rather than for the driver. Made of polyester, it has pockets to house all the trinkets, books, pens and so on that anyone taking a journey would want to have with them, and it is designed to maximise space," says marketing executive Verinder Cheng.
"Our foot/neck massagers are intended for use in a car, too, and can be powered either by a 12V battery or simply plugged into the cigarette light socket. This is a very active market," she adds.
Checkey's major markets are the US and Japan, with shipments also going to Canada, Italy, France and Germany. Minimum order size is 3,000 pieces per item, and delivery time is 35-40 days.
Production takes place at a 150,000-square-metre, 350-worker, ISO 9000-certified factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland using raw materials such as polyester, brush Tricot and PVC sourced from Hong Kong and the mainland.
Meanwhile, Best Product 88 HK Ltd has a specialised interest in automobile window shades and in-depth experience in supplying them to a knowledgeable market that differentiates between various shading needs and the possibilities of front, side and rear car windows.
"Our reflective sunshades use different laminated paper depending on which car window we are shading. For example, for the front window we must guard against sunlight and silver nylon achieves that. However, an additional demand from some users is to also guard against the sun's heat and in that case we use reflective PET with an inside layer of foam," explains marketing manager Jennie Tang.
Buyers also ask to print slogans, advertisements or logos on the outer surface as most of Best Product 88 buyers are working with consumer product companies like Coca-Cola and helping with the promotion activities.
"Our front window shades might bear brands or images from Disney, provided the buyer has a licence," she adds. "We often use silver mesh for side windows, but can also do them in black or white. The silver mesh can host full printing designs for logos or pictures. Rear windows are always in mesh as the driver has to see through them."
Minimum order size is 5,000 sets for delivery 40 days after order confirmation. Major markets are the EU, Japan and elsewhere in Asia. Production takes place at the firm's factories in Dongguan (200 workers) and Fujian Province (800 workers) on the Chinese mainland.
A manufacturer and exporter of electronic premiums in general, 1974-established Parmanand (HK) Ltd also offers a number of automobile-related lines.
"For example, we have a hands-free car kit to assist a car driver take mobile phone calls," says marketing executive Coco Wong. "This model uses Bluetooth technology. There is also a speakerphone, or if a private conversation is necessary, an earphone can be used. The switching control is on the rear-view mirror so the driver can see the incoming caller number."
Another item is a Otube' speaker system. "This is intended for use with an iPod or similar unit," says Wong. "It comes with an in-car charger."
Minimum order size is 300 pieces for the kit and 1,000 pieces for the tube speakers. Delivery time is 35 days. The main market at present is Spain, and the goods are manufactured at factories in Fujian and Guangdong Provinces on the mainland.
Also an auto accessories specialist, 1994-established Wing Shing Car Audio Ltd offers in-car AV products. "We are a car audio and visual products importer, exporter and wholesaler, with more than 25 years in the business," says manager Chris Chan.
A typical product is the FIXmobile FJS series Fujivox component speaker system. This mini-size subwoofer with amplifier is a 130mm, two-way component system with a maximum power output of 180W and a nominal rating of 120W. Sensitivity is 93dB and the frequency response is from 55Hz to 25 kHz. The speaker impedance is 4 ohms.
"The minimum order is 100 sets and delivery depends on the model and the brand required. We can usually source most of our customers' requests as we are the sole agent for FIXmobile, a leading manufacturer of automobile speaker and subwoofer systems."
Changing gears and speeding ahead, the road to Hong Kong is clearly the way to go for auto accessories.
